Bon Tempe Redux

Today we went hiking Bon Tempe lake again, as we did last year. It was beautiful, clear and cool. An invigorating spirit recharger.

This time I brought more gadgets. In my left pants pocket was a small Holux GR-230 Bluetooth GPS Receiver, and in my right pocket a Treo 650 cellphone/PDA. The GPS picks up satellite signals to determine its location, and sends the results to the cellphone via Bluetooth wireless networking. With this setup, and Mapopolis software, I had a moving map display on my cellphone that showed the lake and my current position. I could see how far it was to the next bend, and which way our car was.

What amazed me was that the GPS worked even in my pants pocket, even when we were in the woods amongst the tall trees with but little patches of blue above.

We passed several groups of hikers. A woman in one small group was describing a bargain she'd gotten on children's clothes at a local store. There they were, under the clear blue sky, in the tall green trees by the sparkling blue water with a cool, clean breeze, and they were talking about shopping. It just doesn't get better than that. Oh, wait, I'm a guy. Strike that last part.

Let me get this straight. You went hiking by a beautiful lake, in a forest of tall trees, under blue skies (I'm so envious) and you spent the day playing with your gadgets. And, your complaining because some women were discussing shopping? What's wrong with you? Why didn't you give us the name of the store so that we can go bargain shopping too? Men! Where are your priorities? ;)

Your hiking story inspired me to write some Haiku. Please accept my apologies.

Boys and Their Toys

Gadgets, at what cost?
John Muir turning in his grave,
Oh, wilderness lost.

Shopper's Lament

Oh, bargains galore,
Hiking shopper's obsession,
Not trees. We need stores!

Dave, there is nothing wrong with gadgets. Really, there isn't. I'm just teasing you. :)
