I got all of my courage together and installed a stat-counter on my blog tonight. It actually works and I didn't kill my blog in the process.

I don't know if I'm brave enough to try more blogger hacks. How about if you try them first and tell us how it worked out. :)

I can tell you about two of them. ;)

The dropdown menu for archives has been on my blog for quite some time, and works well. Likewise, the list of recent comments has been working well, and fills in when the comment email fails to arrive.

There are lots of other hacks I'm using, most of which I wrote myself. As long as you keep a backup of your template from before you hack it, you can't hurt your blog. If a hack doesn't work for you, just restore the old template.

How's StatCounter working out for you?

I know that you have explained it before, but I still don't understand how to save the template. If I make any changes, I'm working without a net. (For the statcounter installation, I took careful notes of exactly what I did so that if it didn't work out, I would hopefully be able to reverse it.)

I'm very happy with the statcounter. My readership is much larger and geographically diverse than I had imagined. I just wish that it didn't stop at 100. I would like to keep a running total of the number of visitors. I guess that there are blogger hacks for that, too.

Backing up your template is easy. Even a FEMA director could do it.

You just get to the point where you can edit the template, and before you make any changes, you copy it to the clipboard. Select the entire template text (click in the edit area, type control-A or choose Select all from the edit menu), then type control-C or choose Copy from the edit menu. Now the template should be in your clipboard. Open a text editor, like Notepad, then choose Paste from the edit menu, or type control-V. Now save your template as a text file someplace. Just for grins, open the text file again, and it should look just like your template. Check to make sure you have the whole thing, down to the < /html > at the end.

Once you've backed up your template, you can just close your browser without saving anything unless you want to make some changes.

When you save it, you might want to put the date in the name. Something like TemplateBackup09-15-05.txt and save it under a different name every time you back it up.

Good luck. :)

Thanks,Dave. I made a copy of your instructions and will try them when I'm feeling ambitious again.

It's possible that I can never be a FEMA director. :)
