Magick

I've been downloading every night the latest podcast of Moon over Morocco, each one a twelve minute episode continuing the story of Jack Flanders, an adventurer in Morocco seeking the gates to another world. I listen to it on headphones before I go to sleep. It reminds me of when I was in high school, reading books on the supernatural and out-of-body experiences.

Last night, coincidentally, I watched most of the movie Waking Life on TV, which I had seen in the theaters and enjoyed immensely. It examines many aspects of philosophy, our existence and life and dreams and death. It appeals to the philosopher in me.

The Dresden Files is a new series on the SciFi channel that we've been watching, and today I picked up several of the books the series is based on, about a modern-day wizard living in Chicago.

The synchronicity of enjoying all these stories in close proximity has reminded me of my interest in such things as a boy. I've always deeply felt that I could develop the ability to perform magic, that I should be able to, but never have. Of course, the logical scientist in me scoffs at it, but I can't stop thinking that it's there, lurking in me somewhere. One of the joys of playing online games was having the abilities in the game that I so desired in real life. It fed a need that had gone unsatisfied. Watching Heroes just reinforces that feeling that we have latent abilities.

In the meantime, there's always technology.

I've been enjoying the books. He has interesting characters and plots, and clever writing. Sometimes I think the writing distracts from the story in its cleverness, but maybe that's just me. Try the first one and see if you like it.
