Kibbles 'n' Bits

Seen on a bumper sticker today: DOG IS MY COPILOT

I'm pretty sure the driver wasn't dyslexic. Bend has the highest percentage of dog-lovers of any city I know. When we woke up this morning there was snow everywhere. I went out to get the paper and saw tracks in the street. Shoeprints going out and coming back, with paw-prints going the same ways. Our neighbor walking her dog, "Buddy", in the snow.

We went to the library today. I'm very fond of libraries. I worked in the school library in junior high and high school, and I worked in the public library after that. Two of the biggest rules at the library were: 1) Don't eat in the library, and 2) don't listen to music in the library. Who's been to a library and hasn't heard, "Shhhhh"?

Today I ate at the library and listened to music.

The Allan Byer Band was playing in the Sunriver Library, and there was a small buffet table. It was a wonderfully intimate atmosphere, the library is lovely, and the music was great. Surprisingly good sound for a small band in front of the library fireplace.

Recently we listened to The Mostest playing at McMenamin's. Bands in Central Oregon like to mix and match, and that night The Mostest had Julie Southwell on violin, and Dale Largent and Shireen Amini on drums. (Well, she was Julie Southwell then. Now she's Julie Southwell-Bowers.) Dale and Shireen did a great drum solo together. At one point during the set, this guy in a suit wanders onto the stage from the audience while they're playing. I'm thinking, "This guy must be drunk. He's gonna knock something over!"

Then he goes up to the mike and starts whistling. Incredibly good whistling. He blew me away (ha ha). He warbled to make a canary jealous. His name was "Ed the Whistler" and I found out he's a common fixture in these parts. Ed is also one of the members of the Allan Byer Band, and he was whistling to the music as we walked in today. Nobody said, "Shhhhh!"

if you get shushed in a library these days it's probably *not* a librarian. we don't do that anymore. we want you to be there and enjoying yourself, I swear!

Thanks, miz! Shows how seldom I go to libraries these days. I mostly go to the library for COWPU meetings and to donate books. The new approach does sound more welcoming. Although I bet they wouldn't want a drum circle in there. :)
