Backyard Blue Jay
As I've mentioned before, we have a Western Scrub Blue Jay who frequents our backyard, and who has learned to come (sometimes) when I call, and to eat out of my hand. Here are a couple shots of our little pet:
Blue jays are in the crow family, and what's interesting about their color is that there is no blue pigment in their feathers. The blue color comes from the way the feathers refract light, not from blue ingredients. (And yes, that's my hand with the raw walnut bits.)

Lucky you! My Hub is working on getting some more bird feeders in the yard to draw more of the little critters!
Oh, I hope you saw my response to "what kind of book" in the comments section on my blog. If not, e-mail me and I'll let ya know!

Saw your response. Thanks.
In addition to bird feeders, I'd recommend at least one bird bath. We have three of them, and I've seen the jay in every one of them. I've given him raw peanuts, almonds and walnut bits, and he seems to like the walnuts the best. He'll take all of them, but the others he just plants, and the walnuts he'll actually eat.
Pretty bird! I only have a finch feeder... need to get a birdbath in the yard and some more feeders. Maybe more will show up once the trees I ordered come.
That is just amazing. Great pics.
There's a downside to this...
Now and then the jay will come to the sliding door and peer in, looking for us, and raise a racket if nobody comes out to feed him. He's a clown.
Susan, love your site. Great look and feel. You have a quote on there from Anais Nin that I like, which you'll sometimes see in the Random Quote area below the eMusings banner above. Keep up the good writing.
Great pics. I used to have alot of 'bird visitors' in the city but living in the middle of nowhere here it is ironic there are few. There is so much fee space they have no need to come near to us scary humans! :o(
