Do People Really Change?
Saturday, Connie and I went to a reunion of people who worked for a certain computer game company, and we had a wonderful time. It's been about ten years since we worked there, but the people all looked pretty much the same. Maybe a little less hair on some of the men, or a few more pounds here and there, but it was like we'd never left.
What was fascinating was finding out what people were doing these days. Almost all of the artists were now freelance. The art director was now a yoga instructor. Many of the programmers had moved up into management positions, which I once did but backed away from and didn't wish to repeat.
An executive assistant was now a school teacher. A programmer was now a photographer. One guy who was a programmer was now a gal who was a programmer. She looked good. In either guise, a friend is a friend.
Later that night, I got to wondering about sex-changes in general. I'd always assumed that when a guy had a sex-change, that she would then date men. But is that always true? Do people change because of who they want to date, or because of who they want to be? I would guess it's the former. But what if they want to be a woman, but are still interested in women? I guess that would make them now a lesbian. Life is confusing, especially here in the Bay Area. I'm glad I'm married.

Interesting ideas. I wish I had the answers.
I am curious though, I thought that Connie is an optician. What was she doing working at a computer company?
Connie had always been a bookkeeper, until a few years ago, when she got tendonitis and had to switch professions. No more data entry for her.
Disclaimer: Here comes my philosophical side. Read at your own risk.
You ask, "Do people change because of who they want to date, or because of who they want to be?"
When it comes to gender modification, I would conjecture that any change in external appearance has little to do with who someone wants to date or who someone wants to be.
To even consider undergoing such a significant change, especially considering the tremendous commitment involved, an individual would have to already know with absolute certainty exactly who they are. Their identity would be no mystery to them although it might later come as a surprise to someone else.
In my eyes, the individual already knows perfectly well who s/he is. The physical attributes are being altered not out of want, but out of necessity, the necessity to better represent and to communicate the thoughts and emotions that have always existed on the inside.
With that said, remember to be gentle with me. :)
