Vein Finding Fun
The Cosmic Watercooler blog has a post on vein-finding. I hate giving blood because nurses seem to have a hard time finding my veins. (I guess I'd make a bad drug addict.) It's nice to know that gadgets are coming out to improve the process. Now if only they'd become cheap and widespread.

I sure wish that I had access to those gadgets.(Yes, I, who hates gadgets, actually want them.) I'm lucky that my skin is transparent with large bulging veins, making me an easy stick. I'm unlucky that I have transparent skin with large bulging veins, because I look like an anatomy specimen.
I wish they had those gadgets here. I have to keep squeezing my hand for something to pop up!
It's no fun being a pin cushion. There are some tricks though. Before you go make sure you are well hydrated, drink lots of fluids, not caffiene which actually dehydrates you, wear something warm, when you get cold (or nervous) you vasoconstrict, try to relax. If you are really a hard stick bring a hot pack, dangle the arm (gravity helps to engorge the vessels with blood) and hold the hot pack on the site for a few minutes before they attempt. They shouldn't blow the vein drawing blood unless they pierce the back of the lumen, if they blow it starting the IV they are flushing too hard or too fast. If they can't get it you can come to my office:)
Thanks, Sarah! That all sounds like sensible advice (except that last part). :)
Dave, I think that it's worth a trip to LA to have someone like Sarah stick you. ;)
