100 Films Meme

I don't generally like memes (I'm not a me-too kinda guy), but I liked the one I saw at GemmaK. The way it works is you copy the list of movies and show in bold the ones that you've seen. I took that a step further and gave a one-to-five star rating to the ones I've seen. It didn't seem fair to give ratings to the ones I haven't seen.

Some of those movies I can't remember if I saw or not. It could go either way. I'm impressed that you not only remember, but are able to give a rating.

There were two or three I couldn't be sure if I'd seen or not, so I looked them up on Netflix. There may be one or two more that I did see but have no recollection of.

Don't assign too much value to the stars I assigned; they were a quick gut reaction to my memories of each one, some of which I haven't seen since I was a teen.

I find that often I like a movie much better right after I've seen it, but over time my rating of it falls as the exhiliration of having just seen it wears off. It's the ones that get high ratings, even after much time has passed, that are truly classics in my book.

Sadly, many of my favorites are missing from the list.

It's a bit difficult to give a rating to a movie if you don't know what year it was produced and, therefore, if it is indeed the movie that you viewed and liked.

Take Wuthering Heights, for instance. The original black and white movie was a classic in my book, but I never cared for any of the remakes.

Neil Diamond made a film called The Jazz Singer, but there was also a much earlier movie, which I did not see, with the same name.

It surprises me that you have not seen (or do not remember seeing) Schindler's List, The Philadelphia Story, The Bridge on the River Kwai, The Silence of the Lambs, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, The Searchers, Bringing Up Baby and The Grapes of Wrath to name a few.

Are there some movies that you purposely avoid due to their content? Too violent? Too depressing? Too much slapstick?

My imagination gets carried away when it comes to horror films. Such films frequently cause me to have nightmares. Hence, I'm not in the habit of seeing that particular genre.

BTW, what exactly is a meme?

Good catch, Connie. Netflix seems to drop movies from the favorites list, even if they have five stars. I should start a web page just for favorite movies.

There are movies I avoid, like Schindler's List (too painful, I lost family in the holocaust), or Silence of the Lambs (I don't like most horror movies, psychological thrillers or movies that are otherwise too dark without redeeming feaures). Life's too short to furnish my head with ugliness. And some I just never got around to watching.

A meme is a contagious idea, like a gene that passes from person to person.

This is what I have in my Blogger profile. It's not in any particular order. Plus, I ran out of room due to the limited space that was provided.

Bladerunner
The Terminator
Zardoz

Logan's Run
Silent Running
X-Men
Earth Girls Are Crazy
Indiana Jones and the Lost Ark
Big Fish
The Lord of the Rings
Jason & The Argonauts
Schindler's List
Something's Gotta Give
Forrest Gump

As Good As It Gets
Roman Holiday
Always
Old Yeller
The Yearling
Harold & Maude

I could easily add more:
Chicago
Finding Nemo
True Grit
City of Angels
Meet Joe Black
The Green Mile
The King and I
The Mask of Zorro
Sleepless in Seattle
Cyrano De Bergerac (Ferrer)
Romeo and Juliet (Zeffirelli)
The Chronicles of Narnia
King Kong (most recent release)

And, there are several that I could easily add from your list:
Pirates of the Carribean
March of the Penguins
The Incredibles

and more...

Maybe it's time that I made a list of my own. I do love movies. :)

I understand your decision not to see Schindler's List. Admittedly, I was reluctant to see it at first. Certainly, it was a painful film for Spielberg to make and, yes, it was definitely a poignant film to watch.

Although I, too, lost family in the Holocaust as well as the pogroms in Russia, it was important to me on a very personal level to view the film.

I will say that Spielberg did succeed in conveying the one very positive aspect regarding the individuals that this one man managed to save from certain death, that Schindler made a difference and that his actions had a domino effect for generations to come.

From IMDb:

Shane (1953) Western:
A weary gunfighter attempts to settle down with a homestead family, but a smoldering settler/rancher conflict forces him to act.
