No Natives

Californians hear a lot of stories about how hated they are in Oregon. "Come visit, but don't stay!" is the Oregon motto, they're told. So when we moved here, we had some trepidation about how we'd be received. We were pleased to discover that nobody said anything about our being from California.

Now I know why.

There aren't any native Oregonians left in Oregon.

Okay, maybe two or three.

Our real estate agent? From Sacramento in Northern California. The vet we saw Wednesday? Also from No. Cal. Our neighbor to the east? Auburn in NoCal. Our plumber? From Simi Valley (where we used to live) in SoCal. The doctor Connie saw yesterday? From Terra Linda in Marin County, NoCal. The lady down the street? Oroville in NoCal.

It seems like everyone we meet is from California, Washington or other parts of the country. (The couple on the corner a block from us are a mixed couple. She's from California, he's from Washington. Horrors!)

We have, actually, met a few people who were born here. But they're a distinct minority.

We moved 500 miles, but the people are the same. It's nice to be home.

What do you suppose happened to the native Oregonians? Did they flee to other states, die or fail to reproduce? None of these possibilities sound good. :)

Just like us to wipe out the indigenous and/or semi-indigenous tribes of our nation.

Poor, poor Ore-goners!

Thanks, Jen! Who makes Bend's best ribs (besides you)? Baldy's?

I don't think the natives went anywhere, Melissa. I'm here and I certainly wouldn't wanna go anywhere else. I think there were just so few Oregonians, that they're hidden amongst the flood of Californians, like Fords in a parking lot full of Toyotas.

We have a reservation of Native Americans not far from here. Maybe that's what happened to the Native Oregonians, Candace. Maybe they're on a reservation where they're safe from us ex-pat Californios. I still haven't explored all the caves here. :)

Definitely Baldy's. :) But I usually order their "smothered fries"... yummmm! I have also heard good things about the Mercury Diner, but haven't been there yet.

For a brief, shining moment there was a restaurant at the Shilo Inn called the Smokin' Swine. They had a delectable dish known as "Bones N Butt". Really, it's better than it sounds! Those *were* the best ribs. But the owner decided to leave the biz and closed both restaurants (the other was in Salem).

Californian's on an individual basis MAY have a chance at being decent people, however, they have been so molded into the egocentric atmosphere that California breeds that they can't help but to be what they are. Self centered. This is not LA. We only have an economy based on building more homes that Californians can buy and flip sale to another Californian. The Oregonians are fleeing to places where you aren't. It's sad watching old and poor being forced out of their homes so that another 500 homes can built for Californians can buy and flip. Have you notice the small percentage of homes lived in buy the buyer? Get over the defense that Washintonians move here too. The only bad Washintonian came by way of California about 18 years ago when they bombarded Seattle. Real Washintonians were always welcome in Central Oregon. If you are a native of the North West, you are a much different breed than any Native Californian. I was born in Washington and grew up in Alaska. Believe me....we are different. My family has had property in Central Oregon since the 60's and my wife has 3 generations of family from Bend. People that worked in the woods, chopped down trees, lived off the land. This means actually eating the wildlife. The ethical hunters that follow game regulations that appropriatley manage game are far more environmentally conscious than any VEGAN because they care to see the game healthy and thriving. Look up "Deminishing Return" and learn a little about actually keeping and eating fish that you catch. You don't have to catch and realease everything and it isn't always the best for the health of the fish!!! This is not a wildlife refuge!!! Cougars are not good little kitties that should be protected to the point where they are overpopulated. Your right, we did invade their territories...if you don't like managing cougars, move back to California and give them more room.....I'd take them over most Californians any day!!! QUIT BUILDING SO MANY HOUSES!!!
