A Busy Day

Last year we attended the Bite of Bend event at the Old Mill, and enjoyed it quite a bit. This year it was held in downtown Bend, and it's now a two-day event.

A lot of restaurants we like had booths there, but we wanted to try food from places we hadn't gotten to yet. Despite that, it was hard to resist getting some ribs at the Baldy's BBQ booth. But I did. Resist, that is. I'm surprised I had the willpower.

Instead, I picked up some tacos carne asada from Rico's Tacos. Every time I pass their place on 3rd Street, I chuckle at the sign, "Rico's Tacos, Tacos Ricos" which means, "Rico's Tacos, Tasty Tacos". I like the pun on Rico's/Ricos. Sorry. Anyway, they were great.

I also tried a Kobe beef slider (small hamburger) from Mate Ago's. There's nothing like Kobe beef. mmmmm. I didn't know they had food, I thought they just served Yerba Mate and coffee type stuff. UPDATE: I've learned that the beef slider was actually from 28 (formerly Cafe 28). The stores are next to each other, and shared a booth at the Bite of Bend.

Connie had tilapia from the Bend Fish Company. I encouraged that, since it's highly unlikely we'll ever eat at the restaurant. All they serve is seafood, as far as I know, and I don't do seafood. She enjoyed the tilapia.

For dessert I wandered over (as in, made a bee-line) to the Hurricanes booth. They're a new dessert shop near Safeway on the west side of Bend. Had a cream puff that was exquisite. This was depressing, since I've been trying for a long time to make cream puffs that didn't deflate after cooking. Our cream puffs taste great, they just don't stay puffed. You know how a guy feels about going limp. The baker from Hurricanes was at the booth, and she generously answered some of my questions. "Bread flour or AP flour?" "Bread flour." "Do you pierce the puff while it's cooking, while it's cooling, or not at all?" "Not at all." "What's the secret to keeping them from deflating?" "Cook it more." Now I need to make cream puffs again. Kudos to Hurricanes.

After stuffing ourselves silly at the Bite of Bend, we went into Sunriver for the Sunriver Sunfest. Stopped at Sunriver Books and Music, a little independent bookstore (and proprietor) we like. We picked up some books in the amusing Sookie Stackhouse vampire series by Charlaine Harris. Spent an hour listening to the talented Moon Mountain Ramblers and picked up two of their CDs. There's such talent in Central Oregon!

And it's only Saturday!

A fish restaurant that only serves fish? That's odd. Usually they have alternative dishes so that non-fish eaters can eat there too.

By the way, did you have a bad experience with fish?

Yes, I did. I ate one, and it tasted bad. It's like that every time. ;)

Hurricane's is delish. They also have nice sammies at lunch time and "real" (boiled) bagels. Yummm... now I am hungry!

We'll have to stop by there sometime. I suggested that they needed a web site and she admitted grudgingly, "Yeah, it's on our list of things to do."
