Silenced

Former talk show host Tom Snyder has passed away, and I grieve. I feel old. So many people and things have left this world of ours. I read today of a drug that may extend our lives, and I wonder what it would be like to be immortal. To outlive even more than we do now, to watch all the things we knew as a child recede over the horizon?

Tom Snyder has passed away. I remember, the summer after high school, staying up late every night, watching Johnny Carson and then Tom Snyder before going to sleep. We watch them from the comfort of our beds, all cozy and intimate, and it's as if they are close personal friends, these men who bring amusement to so many of us, and yet do not know us. Their voices lull us, and inform us, and make us laugh. How better to end a day than by enjoying this odd socialization?

Tom Snyder is gone, as is Johnny Carson, and the airwaves have lost those rich, talented voices. Today we have Leno, and Letterman, and Conan and Ferguson. One falls, and another rises to take its place. Such is the way of humanity. That is as it should be. We have a span of years to enjoy life, to give back to the world, and then we pass the torch and rest forever. How stale it all would be if nothing ever changed.

Good night, Tom.
