On Parade

Today's newspaper had a few items that interested me. In "Parade", the weekly insert , one reader complained about Emily Procter not refusing to wear less revealing fashions on CSI: Miami Vice and another woman commented, "Hire us for our talent, not for our physical features." Yeah, like that's going to happen. Hopefully they would also hire male actors for their talent. Who needs George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise?

On the topic of bias regarding physical features, there was a letter to the editor asking readers to vote for the person, not their gender or skin color. I've often felt the same way. If it's okay to vote for someone because they're black, should I vote for a candidate because they're white? If it's okay to vote for a candidate because she's a woman, should I vote for a candidate because he's a man?

I think debates are one way to get a feel for a candidate, but what I'd really like to see would be something more like "Survivor: Washington". I'd like to see a little simulated society, like a video game, where we see how each candidate would react to various situations, and what the consequences of their actions would be. Have them deal with terrorism, the economy, foreign trade and natural disasters and see how they act under pressure. See if they're able to work with others for the common good, and not succumb to partisan pressure and lobbyist enticement.

Candidates would have to pass a test to get in the running. How come we have to pass tests to drive a car or graduate from school, but any idiot can (and has) run for office? Sadly, another question would be why, as voters, we elect those idiots. Do we get what we deserve?

"Parade" had a list of the world's 10 worst tyrants. George Bush didn't make the list.
