Bend Observations

As I've mentioned previously, I have a new job as a programmer for a downtown Bend business. They let me work from home as much as reasonable, but I come in at least once a week for the weekly meeting. This gives me an opportunity to try various establishments at whim, such as Richard's donuts (wonderful!).

I'm looking forward to the opening of the Pita Pit. I plan to check out the crepe place. I had lunch the other day at the Full Throttle Deli. Since Boris keeps recommending it, I thought I'd give it a try. Somebody has to keep Boris honest!

How was it? Fan-licking-tastic! I had a roast beef on rye, which I haven't had in quite a while and have had a big hankering for. The rye bread was fresh and soft and tasty. That's one of the things that often go wrong with this sandwich: the rye bread is often dried out and chewy. But Full Throttle had wonderful rye. The cold, rare roast beef was indeed rare and very, very tender, and tasty. Too often the roast beef at other places is over-cooked, too tough or not fresh. The roast beef at Full Throttle just melted in your mouth. Probably the best roast beef I've had on a sandwich. I ordered it with lettuce, tomato and a little mustard. Perfection. I can see I'm going to be going up those stairs a lot.

At work our meeting room is in a corner office with big windows. I hate meetings. I feel unproductive and restless. I'd rather be pounding out code. So I unobtrusively look out the window a lot. (I hope it's unobtrusively!)

One of the things I love about Bend is the quantity of alternative transportation in use. Looking out the office window, I see people getting around with a wide variety of conveyences. People walk a lot. They ride bikes a lot. I've seen a Segway. Girls on motor-scooters (like a Vespa). Lots of skateboards. Roller blades. Thursday I saw a girl on an electric skateboard. I see pedi-cabs, electric cars, Smart cars, tandem bikes, recliner bikes, stilts and jogging strollers. Way to go, Bend.

Ah I'm going to try Full Throttle Deli today.

I walk and take bus a lot, it's not a pleasant experience as sometimes the bus drivers just ignore and drive by me even though I signal them to stop. Other times I'm late for stuff because the bus is late. So honestly, despite I like to save the planet, I still prefer to drive and pollute the world like everyone else.

From the May 19 article in the Bulletin:
The Pita Pit, a fast-food chain that specializes in flatbread sandwiches, will open in late June in downtown Bend, according to franchisee Chris Coulter.

The restaurant will be located at 806 N.W. Brooks St., behind Bluefish Bistro in the space formerly occupied by the Blue Windows boutique. It will face the south Mirror Pond parking lot.

Looks like they missed their projection. When I walked by the other day it was still being worked on. Looks like the counters are in place and it's been painted, but there's no furnishings or appliances in view.

I like your avatar with the flowers, Jen.

When I was younger I used to take the bus a lot. I hated when they didn't show up or passed me by. We should have someone videotape a bus ignoring you, Mother Hen, then show that at meetings where the bus drivers talk about their training and how they need more pay. :)

Stilts? Was a circus passing through? :)

That sounds like the perfect sandwich. I hate dry roast beef.

I've never been in a town with such a wonderfully high concentration of artists, musicians, poets and performers. There's a big local community of people who walk on slacklines (like a tightrope), who juggle, who dance with fire, who walk on stilts, or hula hoop.

Even when there's no festival or street fair going on, you'll see these people practicing in the park or walking around town. I love it.

You've probably seen my pictures of the fire dancers, the belly dancers, the jugglers and slackliners. That's only a fraction of the great stuff I see just on Wednesdays when I'm in the drum circle.

I hate meetings also. I've heard of companies that keep them short by making everyone stand or drink a glass of water first.

LOL

I once worked at a place that used meetings as a negotiation tactic. They'd schedule the meeting with a vendor or customer just before lunch, then not break for lunch until they had a deal. :)

Nah, I even wrote a formal letter to complaint, and of course, I heard NOTHING!

I'm just going to put it down to racism. Yah, that would get some attention IMMEDIATELY!
