Terrible Fire

Sayre Fire Evacuates 10,000 People

There's another terrible fire burning in the Sylmar area of Los Angeles. My father was evacuated early this morning. From what I can tell, several homes are burning where he lives, and they withdrew firefighters from the area.

The good news is that my dad is okay, and he has a place to stay. We just don't know the condition of his home.

I grew up in LA. It seemed like there were fires every year. We still find ashes in some of our things. This is one of the reasons we left Southern California in the early 90's: the frequent fires. Well, fires and smog. And crime. And the heat. And the traffic. And the schools. We didn't want our daughter growing up there. I'm so glad we moved.

And my dad is safe.

Update: My dad says that when he was evacuated in the wee hours that there were so many firefighters in his neighborhood that he figured the house was safe. He didn't take anything. From what I've read in the news, though, it got so bad all the firefighters withdrew about 6am, and while there's no list yet of which houses if any were left, the news reports seem to indicate that his whole neighborhood is gone. He lived in the Oakridge Mobile Home park. It's now a crime scene, because arson is suspected. But my dad is safe.

Thank you, Yusuf! Your photographs are wonderful. I also liked the Tarkan tunes on your MySpace player. The only one I recognized was Simarik (La Chanson du Bisou), which seems to be called "Kiss Kiss" here in the states.

Thanks for stopping by.

I'm so sorry about your dad's neighborhood. There isn't much left. Is his home still there?

We don't yet know, Melissa. Thank you for asking. I hope you're safe where you are.

I'm so sorry. Your dad must be so incredibly bummed - but at the same time, so thankful.
