Coulda Been Me
A man on his bike was hit by a car at 1 am yesterday in southeast Bend. They say the cyclist was wearing dark clothing, and did not have a front flashing light on his bike. Police are looking for the hit-and-run driver.
It wasn't me.
But it could have been. Could have been you. Countless times since moving to Central Oregon I've seen bicyclists and pedestrians in dark clothing at night with no lights, traveling where there are no streetlights. I've complained about this before.
Some bicyclists are proposing that they be allowed to run stop signs. I propose that law enforcement should give a ticket to any bicyclist traveling at night without lights and reflectors.
I'd propose the same thing for pedestrians, but I'm guilty myself of walking at night in dark clothes without reflectors. But at least I'm sober and I stay on the sidewalk.

I believe riding without lights after dark is already a citable offense, at least it is down here in California. Might be worth digging up the appropriate bits of Oregon code and offering them up to the local constabulary.
