This is Dave...

"Hello, this is Dave from the Allied Carpet & Furniture Cleaning Service. We're going to be in your area this week and we'd like to stop by and leave you a free estimate on your carpet or furniture cleaning."

I could deliver this spiel in less than ten seconds, all in one breath. Sadly, I still can. If you were ever on the receiving end of it, my deepest apologies.

Here's another story from that job, filed under A Bad First Date. There were two of us at the phones, me and my buddy, Norm. We worked from a reverse phone directory, that listed people by their address. I'd call each house in turn, imagining the phone ringing first one house, then the next, all the way down the block.

One day I called a house, gave my pitch to the girl who answered, and she started laughing. Was I that bad? Thankfully, no. She said she used to work at the same place I was. I told that to Norm, who'd been there longer than I, and he remembered her. He said she was cute, so I asked her out, and she accepted. I always had the best luck when girls couldn't see my face. :/

I picked her up a few nights later and we went to a movie. I think her name was Peggy. (Is that right, Norm?) She was cute, as Norm had said, but she answered every question with a monosyllable. Try as I might, I couldn't seem to engage her in conversation (or anything else, for that matter). I never called her again.

Only my own, Lisa. ;P

At least I can rest in the knowledge I never had to offer fries with that. ;)

Either I'm hallucinating, again, or you added to your post after publishing. That's okay, though, it's a good story.

I don't mean to be disagreeable, but it seems to me that you had the best luck with girls who first saw your face. ;)

Yeah, I added to it. So sue me. It was an update. :)

You're right though, from a certain perspective. I've had luck getting dates sight unseen, but better luck with relationships when I exposed myself right at the beginning.

That's been a principle of mine since then. When I go on a job interview, or any situation where I'm meeting someone, I'm honest about who I am and how I am. It saves me later on from having to explain why appearances were deceiving.
