My Name is Dave...

Hello, my name is Dave...

and I'm an Oregonian.

When I went to the Dept. of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in California, it was usually an annoying experience. Waiting in lines, sometimes in the wrong ones, lots of paperwork, and then waiting to get your new license by mail. What a difference things are in Oregon.

Last night I read the drivers handbook before bed. That's how I study for a test. I have a hard time reading something more than once. I'm really bad at studying. So I read it the night before the test and hope enough sticks.

Today, Connie and I went to the DMV. Instead of standing in lines, you just take a number. It wasn't long until we were called. The test is taken on computers with touch screens. The question is displayed, along with four possible answers, and you touch the one you think is right. It tells you immediately if you got the question right, and shows you the right answer if you got it wrong. As soon as you've answered the minimum number of questions right, it ends the test. You don't have to take all 35 questions if you get enough right to begin with.

I missed two. Connie missed one. We both passed.

They took our money (no waiting in line again), took our pictures (no line), and within a few minutes handed us our new Oregon drivers licenses. Not a temporary, but the actual license. Now that's efficiency!

Ratio of number of drivers in state to state funding for DMV?

Anyway, sounds nice, even by Santa Rosa standards.

you got lucky. some DMVs are better than others. in Lebanon Oregon you can do in and there are usually three employees and no customers. everyone jokes around and doing driver thingies is painless. In Albany Oregon there is one sour nasty mean old dried up bitty and 78 people with numbers ahead of you. In Downtown Portland there is bulletproof glass and a metal drawer to put your forms in. Does LaPine have a dmv? my brother i think went to Bend for his.

btw... Congratulations on becoming an Oregonian. this is a great place to call home.

Couldn't tell you, Mike. :)

I seem to recall seeing a sign in LaPine for the DMV, dak-ind, but I'm not positive. I didn't realize that the quality varied so much. Glad I went to Bend. :)

The DMV in Santa Clarita is good. I just make an appointment. They run on time and there is no wait. The last time I got out of there in about 5 minutes. You don't have to move to Oregon to get a good DMV.

DMV in my town is a nightmare, especially at lunch times. So in the States you have to sit the tst again if you move between States? Hmmm in Oz we just fillout change of address forms and hand in the old licence, then DMV take our photo for a new one.

Thanks. :) The term they use here is Oregonians, but I like yours, too.
