In Media Res

I watched American Inventor tonight. I don't watch reality shows, but I've always thought of myself as an inventor, or wished to be, and I was drawn to the show and the ambitions of the participants, and particularly the judge who's an inventor. He rocks.

Another show I like to watch is The Unit with Dennis Haysbert. I was reading a review of the show, and the review used the phrase in media res to describe how the show starts in the middle of a mission. I had to look that up. It means to be "in the middle of things". I like stories that start fast like that, right in the action, then slow down later and bring you up to speed.

Life is like that. Every morning, I wake up, (so far), and I'm in the middle of my life. Every day, half your life is behind you, and half your life is ahead of you, and the life you get to experience is just what's happening right this instance.

On the web today I read that we may soon be living to the age of 150. That scares me. I never expected to live as long as I have already. I grew up in California in the 60's, worried about the cold war, and race riots, and earthquakes and fires, and I just never expected to see the year 2000. Yet I'm still here. Now I have to worry about preparing for over a hundred more years of life? I don't think I'm ready for that.

I'm more afraid of living to 150 then dying in middle age. Dying young is no longer an option for me. Extreme old age is so difficult that I don't know how people survive it. Well, I guess they don't. Never mind. :)
