Lava Butte
That's Lava Butte. (Pronounced byoot, not butt.) It's a few miles south of Bend, Oregon, and we visited there Saturday. The butte was formed thousands of years ago when lava erupted, forming this 500-foot hill of rock.
We hiked some of the trails at the bottom of the butte.
We drove up the 8% grade to the top of the butte, and hiked a trail there.
It's mostly a barren field of black and red cinders and obsidian. Amazingly, though, trees and bushes grow in the lava field.
Golden-mantled squirrels seem to flourish there, as well.

So, did you get some more rocks for your garden?
LOL I sure wanted to!
Sadly, there's no rock collecting on federal land. Lava Lands is in the Deschutes National Forest.
I should have probably taken some anyway. It's not like it's a federal offense or anything.
Okay, maybe it is.
The visitor center there (which is great, by the way), told me I could collect rocks at Glass Butte, which is about an hour east of Bend. Road trip! :)
I really do have to get to the U.S and have a look about sometime!
I agree! (How far can you swim?) ;)
