We're Alive!

What a busy week! Our daughter and friends have come and gone, and we miss them all already. I came down with a head cold the first day of my vacation, but I enjoyed myself anyway and tried not to let it interfere.

We hiked a lot in the snow, including the trails at Tumalo Falls, Benham Falls, Big Tree and Smith Rock. Above is a shot of the five of us snowshoeing at Kapka Butte near Mt. Bachelor. It was snowing and there was a couple feet of fresh powder, but we enjoyed it. (I'm the one all in black.)

We walked the road to Tumalo Falls, which seemed to have been the same idea for many cross-country skiers. Every skier we met had one or more dogs with them. I felt out of place. Maybe next time we go out in the snow we'll have to borrow the neighbor's dog. Here, Buddy!

We ate at many of our favorite restaurants, including El Pescador, Ranchero, Johnny Carino's, Tumalo Feed Company and the Black Bear Diner. I'm hoping all our hiking compensates for all our eating. Do calories count during vacation?

We wrapped it all up last night, when we went to the McMenamins Theatre to watch The Illusionist, which is a cool movie, and a great one to watch at that old-fashioned theater, which has couches instead of theater seats. The tickets are $3 and food is served to you at your seat. Fun and funky.

I'll be putting up more pictures this week as I feel better. Sorry I've been so lax in posting.

I hope that you didn't walk into a bank dressed like that.

I'm guessing that Connie and Debbie are the ones kneeling in the snow. Am I right?

There's nothing like cold cash. ;)

Debbie's kneeling, bottom right, but Connie's next to me.

Dave

You are a real trooper!

Not only did you snowshoe during a snow storm, you did it with a head cold and made do with the nominal cold weather gear that you had.

You chauffeured us all over the county and then some. You even humored my desire (obsession? --- the jury's still out) to take a look at real estate for sale (even if the drive was out of the way or the sun had set).

The areas that you took us to were both enjoyable and breathtaking (or was it the snow and/or the cold?).

You and Connie chose wisely. You have a wonderful home and some seriously gorgeous country for your new roots.

I already miss the deer and the gray squirrels foraging around your house. The peace and quiet! When I returned home, a plane flew overhead and the sound startled me. The traffic noise from vehicles driving by in front of our house is more noticeable and strikingly unnatural to my ears.

Need I mention that I miss Connie's cooking! I'm ready for another pineapple-coconut cake!

Thanks for showing us such a fantabulous time and for making this birthday celebration a memorable one. I'm pleased that Debbie was able to join in the fun!

We fervently hope to have the opportunity to come out again during the spring/summer.

What about my cooking?! ;) Never mind. We had a blast, and we're glad you did too. Now it's too quiet here. Hope to see you again soon!

That reminds me.

I still want a copy of your delicious crap errr... crêpe recipe. As well as the secret to getting the crêpes cooked so that the texture is consistent. That you manage to do this without burning them is beyond me.

Debbie and I were doing our best to share every piece of crap errr... crêpe that we could. It wasn't easy.

I still haven't found the kugel recipe. I'll send it on to you when I locate it.

Crepe Recipe

3 eggs
1-1/2 cups milk (we use nonfat)
2 tablespoons melted butter or margarine
1-1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt

Add all but flour to blender and blend. Add flour and blend for a minute. Push down flour as needed, blend another minute. Let it sit in refrigerator for at least an hour. (That's important!)

Lightly butter a hot non-stick frying pan. Add a tablespoon or two of batter and tilt pan until it barely covers the flat part of pan evenly. (I let the pan cool slightly before adding batter, then reheat.) Let it cook about a minute or two, until the edges curl up and slightly brown. Flip and cook until the crepe looks somewhat translucent. The first one almost never turns out right. Only butter the pan before the first one. It's tricky and takes practice to perfect the pouring (I don't measure, just pour straight from blender) and cooking, but the results are so marvelous and can be used so many ways, it's worth the trouble. Glad you liked them!

Non-stick, eh? Now, that might be a problem. We avoid non-stick cookware, because of the potential it has to release dangerous fumes, which would be fatal for Selene.

Sort of makes you wonder what those same fumes are doing to us non-feathered folks, doesn't it?

Do you think that PAM might work?

Just reading your recipe made me drool. Darn! I'm certain that Rusty can figure out a solution.

=)
