Trading Places

Hi, folks. It's me, Connie. Dave has been encouraging me for some time to do a post of my own, but I have thus far resisted the urge because I have heard it can become addictive. When he decided he didn't want to do a blog about our adventures on Sunday, I decided to step up.

We have been wanting to go the the Oregon coast for quite a while, so Saturday I suggested to him that since the pass seemed to be clear, we should go. Road Trip! (Dave's two favorite words in the world, besides "Feeling frisky?") He agreed immediately. After all, it had been a good two weeks since his last road trip.

We set out Sunday morning about 9:30, early for us. In order to get to the coast from Bend, you must first traverse the Santiam Pass. I love the pass. When we crossed it last summer, it was like a trip through the Enchanted Forest. In the winter, it resembles a Currier & Ives Christmas card. The statuesque pine trees that line the road are heavy with snow. As you get down into the lower elevations, you pass furry, moss covered trees, and the ice clinging to the rocks look like frozen water falls. It's really lovely. It takes a couple of hours all told, but it passes quickly since the scenery is so pretty.

After a quick pit stop in the town of Lebanon, it was off to Corvallis for lunch at Ruby Tuesday. (Ribs for him, crab cakes for me. Yum.) Our destination, the town of Newport, was about an hour from Corvallis. When we got there, we were greeted by Newport's welcoming committee - a group of fat, mustachioed sea lions. Their job was to bark a greeting to us. One side of the street was lined with traps designed to catch crab. It smelled like a cat's paradise.

The other side of the street was lined with shops with a nautical theme. We stopped at most of them and did a little shopping and wine tasting (me, not Dave, who doesn't imbibe). I got a couple of bottles of a very lovely German Riesling. The bottles are frosted, with a clear area that lets you view the scenic image on the back of the bottle, magnified by the clear wine. It's clever, and pretty too!

One shop was called "The Cat House" and featured lots of things having to do with cats. We bought some peacock feathers for the cat and a t-shirt for me that said, "Dogs have masters, cats have staff." After we killed a couple of hours shopping, we headed back.

The trip back was, in my opinion, not as pleasant. Although Dave would disagree with me, I think the road was dicey. (Was not! -dkg) In my humble opinion, driving on a twisty, icy road in the fog at night is scary. (Is not! -dkg) The road conditions did not phase Dave in the least. He merrily drove along, singing along with the MP3's we had brought along - an eclectic collection of songs ranging from Elvis Presley to Elvis Costello (Accidents will happen!) I was having hot flashes the whole trip home. (I'm 50 now, I'm allowed to have those.) Road conditions not withstanding, we made it home safely. By the time we arrived, the fog had cleared and we were able to see the Milky Way in the crystal clear skies.

Hopefully, you have enjoyed this woman's perspective of a man's blog. Let me know if you would like me to keep contributing, because now I'm well and truly hooked.

Great job, Connie. Please write more posts.

I would have been uneasy on those roads too. Sometimes I think that men are overly confident (present company excluded, Dave). Have I ever mentioned that when patients come to the hospital with an injury caused by stupidity, it is usually to a man?

I'm just starting to get hot flashes too. I'm going to have to write a post on that.

Wonderful photos Connie! I can't believe you were able to get so close to the sea lions :o)

Perhaps you could do a guest post once a week, that way we wouldn't miss out on Dave's gadgets and we'd have your guest spot to look forward to :o)

Melissa - Thanks for the encouragement. Dave said it was good, but I really needed an unbiased opinion.
Driving with Dave has always been an experience. Kinda like Mr. Toad's wild ride, only safer.
I can't wait to read about those hot flashes - I like to call them "power surges" ;)

Michelle - I love the idea of doing this once a week. Although, sometimes its a litte tough wrestling the computer away from Dave.

But wrestling is so much fun! ;)

I call them power surges too. I thought that my phrase was original.

Don't limit yourself to posting once a week. There should be a new post every day or so and Dave has been slacking. Dave must have a stack of extra computers. Use one of those, so that you can become as addicted as the rest of us.

Bravo, Connie!

Love your imagery!

Connie writes: "In the winter, it resembles a Currier & Ives Christmas card."

Way to go, Connie!

I didn't know you're a wino!

My biggest gripe isn't the *power surges*. It's the *mental pause* that drives me crazy!

Melissa - I don't have as much material to work with since I'm now retired. Dave seems to think I should dredge up some stories about my tragic past, but I'm not sure the cyberworld is ready for that yet.

Candace - The imagery is even better after a couple of glasses of wine!
I hate the mental pauses, too. Just think, now I can have both blonde moments and senior moments!

I hate driving on that highway to Newport! One of my favorite parts of the coast are the seals and Sada Sushi next to Ripleys.

You go, Connie! I like the new angle to Dave's persepective (perhaps Dave will write about the same trip and we'll see how they compare?!). And I liked that I could come along vicariously on a road trip in a new area! More! More!

Shannon - I'm just glad it was Dave driving and not me! Dave doesn't do fish, so we don't get to too many sushi bars, unfortunately.

SidDawagon - Thanks for the encouragement. I will certainly do more in the future. Happy to have you along for the trip!

Good post Connie. I think once a week is fine. Lately it's the most I can come up with. I'm totally amazed that Melissa can do it on a daily basis.

Truth is, Connie doesn't like sushi either. When we go to Japanese restaurants (which I love), Connie usually orders don buri, and never sushi. :)

When Melissa got into blogging, some sadist (*cough* me *cough*) told her she should post every day or two. Doesn't mean I do it myself! ;)

Ruby Tuesday has a GREAT salad bar..> I hope you had some.

Aren't sea lions the ones with long, sharp teeth?

BTW... just wait till Dave goes to sleep, then grab the computer. :)

As Melissa suspected, I have a stack of computers of various flavors. Connie has her own laptop she uses for email and web and blogging. You can't blame me for hogging the computer! :)

I think it's walruses that have the big tusks. We've never tried the Ruby Tuesday salad bar. I'll keep it in mind next time we're there.

Dave... "Teeth", not "tusks"... :)
