Wild Guests

This pretty little fawn was just chillin' in our backyard yesterday for about an hour until mom came and fetched her.

When not knocking back some of that sweet nectar, this rufous hummingbird stands guard on the nearby pussy willow, fending off all interlopers that attempt to drink from this feeder. Small but fierce.

No fawns here --- ::drool:: ---, but tons of fierce, fast and fussy rufouses.

Really great pics, Dave! We have a pair of twin fawns, here in our neck of DRW. Also, this is the first year that Mr. Michaels and I have had hummingbird feeders. We keep asking ourselves why we never had them before - the turf wars are hilarious to watch! We have one in the front and one in the back of the house and I swear the same guy is protecting them both. He's a stud. Can you tell we're empty nesters, when we start having full-on conversations about what the hummingbirds are doing...?

Thanks, Live.

Hummingbirds are endless fun to watch. We get 3 or 4 at a time doing aerial combat that looks like ballet. They'll go after anything that gets too close... cats, people, large birds. Cockly little guys!

We make our own nectar. We add 1/4 cup of sugar (must be real sugar) to every cup of water. I make 3 cups at a time, so I add 3/4 cup of sugar to 3 cups of water, and I add one drop of red food color so it's easier for me to see how much is in there. The hummers don't care if it's colored or not, and I don't believe the tales that it's bad for them.

Enjoy the show. :)
