Photography Trick

This, if I recall correctly, is a sleeping lion at The Mirage in Las Vegas. Reminds me of our cat. Anyway, notice the chain-link fence between me and the lion? No?

Not to worry, I didn't sneak in her cage.

My favorite camera these days is a 7 megapixel Panasonic TZ3. I love the 10x power optical zoom, the large 3-inch LCD, the light sensitivity and the image stabilization.

When I went to take this picture, I was annoyed by the fence showing up, as in the photo below (of a white tiger). I really wanted the fence out of the picture, but I wasn't close enough to get the lens between the links. What was I to do?

What I wanted to do was to blur it out somehow. I couldn't blur it with depth of field, but could I use motion blur? I tried an experiment.

While keeping the camera aimed at the lion, I moved to the side as I clicked the shutter. My hope was that the camera's image stabilization would keep the lion in focus, and the fence, being closer, would motion blur and be less annoying.

It seems to have worked. I am pleased.
