Time to Celebrate!

Tomorrow's my birthday, and we want to go out to dinner, but we're not sure where. On the one hand, it'd be nice to go back to someplace we know we like, like Pine Tavern or Staccato or Blacksmith Diner or Zydeco or TFC or where-ever, but on the other hand it'd be nice to go someplace we haven't yet been. Coyote Ranch? Ariana? 541 Lounge? I've survived yet another year without being killed by a falling space station, a wayward trucker, a rabid politician or other calamity.

Got any suggestions? Where's the best place in Central Oregon to celebrate one's decline into old age?

I think Ariana is overrated. Coyote Ranch or Madeline's in Redmond are both good. Deep is excellent if you like sushi.

I also want to try Jackalope some time, since BOR is so fond of it. I always seem to go to Baldy's for my bday, though! :)

Happy-happy!

Ariana is overrated? I totally disagree -- it's my favorite expensive dining place in Bend. I went to Zydeco for my bday on Saturday and thought it was awful.

Yes, Jackalope is great Jen, you should totally go! Dave, if you haven't been to the new Blacksmith, I highly recommend it. Get there a little early and try something off the bar menu for your appetizer like the Kobe-Lamb sliders which are hella good, and then head to your table for dinner, you wont be disappointed.

Happy Birthday!!!

Oh yes, hit the Blacksmith early. Their happy hour is awesome esp the Cowboy Flatbread. In my present condition, I couldn't try the drinks.

Happy birthday! Forget dinner, what's important is the cake. Eat lots of it and enjoy.

By the way, is your pond covered in snow? Are the fishies okay?

Thanks! We ended up going to the Blacksmith restaurant. We weren't sure where we were going to end up, with all these suggestions, plus another friend recommending Blue Fish Bistro, but as we got into Bend I just kind of felt like Blacksmith. And it was great. My steak was tender and juicy and I love the demiglaze it comes with, and Connie enjoyed her Corn Gnocchi.

I'm not that fond of cake (sorry, Melissa) but we split a chocolate mousse / rocky road ice cream / chocolate brownie thing they have. Yum.

Still no word on the job front.

Oh yeah, the pond. There's a little birdbath heater in the pond, which is designed to keep a birdbath from freezing up. It only turns on when the water gets close to 32 degrees. Between that and the waterfall action, it hasn't frozen up. When the temps dropped below zero the surface would ice up but never all the way, because of the waterfall and the heater.

The last time I could see, the fish were still alive, but that was a couple weeks ago. The snow around the pond is so deep I can't really get a good look. Maybe when I'm feeling better I'll shovel some of the snow away from the sides. Fortunately, it hasn't snowed much the past couple days, so I haven't had to shovel.

A few days ago I shoveled a path from the front to the propane tank in the back, and to the gas shutoff at the side of the house. Yesterday the gas guy came to see if I needed a refill, and saw the path in the belly-deep snow and told me it was a thing of beauty. :)
