Fear of Tattoos

Tattoos don't scare me. In fact, they rather fascinate me. Part of the fascination is what a tattoo reveals about the owner. But I've never gotten a tattoo myself.

Part of it is the pain. I'm pretty good at handling pain. I had four wisdom teeth taken out at once with just a local. But I try not to subject myself to pain unnecessarily.

The biggest factor that keeps me from getting a tattoo is having to decide on what to have permanently inked into my skin. I try to be kind to my future selves by not doing anything that they might disapprove of. I guess you could say it's commitment phobia. Hey, I'm male.

I do occasionally draw a design on myself with henna. A week or two and it's gone. Nobody needs to know. Do you have a tattoo? What and where? Would you be more apt to get one if it could be removed easily? What would you get? (And where?)

There's a tattoo ink that can be erased easily with a single laser treatment. But I'd still have trouble deciding what tattoo to get, and trusting the artist.

We've played with henna as well. The Princess had picked up some henna kits at one of the local Indian grocery stores. Annette and I had matching Pyar (love) tattoos on our forearms for about six weeks.

Never got one for mainly the same reasons. I also expect that the secret intelligence community may change their mind and come knocking at my door.

I'm under the impression that the CIA frowns at tattoos on field agents.

i think the tattoo question is a classic because it's like "if you could only bring 3 things to a desert island, what would they be?"
people are naturally curious about each other, and what's more revealing than the question: "what would you etch on yourself and why?" is inherently revealing. i always like thinking of new ones, but i can't commit either. maybe it also comes with being creative introspective...

I once went to bat mitsvah where an artist was giving people tattoos, with washable paint. That is the only kind that I would want. I do not want to be marked for life, even if it is only a butterfly.

I've always held that it was regard or respect more than fear that would always keep me tat-less. But if people respond to your question and tell you where and what, would they be "tattle telling"?
