Strange Karma

Debbie called us tonight with an odd story. She and her boyfriend were walking down the street in their new home of Honolulu when a little old white man approached them. He asked Debbie if she wanted one hundred dollars. She looks at her boyfriend (the black belt) as if to ask, "Is this guy a creep or what?"

The old man says he has one hundred dollars for each of them, and they wouldn't have to do anything for it. But...

The man says if they take the money now, it will be bad karma and they will lose out on a thousand dollars in the future. Do they still want it?

What would you do?

Debbie figures he's either demented, or a rich old guy giving his money away, or something. When I heard it, I thought maybe it was a sociology professor doing a study.

Debbie and her boyfriend both took the money. I've always told Debbie there's "no such thing as a free lunch", so when she told me about it she was worried I'd be mad. I wasn't. I was just thinking, "Why does this never happen to me?"

I'm not making this up, folks.

Or bi-polar....that kind of behaviour isn't uncommon in someone experiencing a 'high'. In fact giving money away to strangers is specifically indicated in some cases.

Really? I've never heard that. I'd feel bad if that was the case.

Strangely enough, Debbie needed 100 dollars to pay for a bus pass, which needed to be paid in cash. It was as if karma delivered the money to her.

That is so weird!

Maybe he was handing out counterfeit bills....

Innit? She held the bill up to the light, and it had the security strip, and they accepted it when she bought her bus pass.

I would have been afraid and kept walking. The guy sounds like he was off his medication.

At least the money went to a good cause.

When I'm next to people in line or elsewhere, I often strike up a conversation. But if a guy came up to me in the street like that, I'd have probably kept on walking too.
