Yet Another Meme

I finished this last night, but didn't post it until today. Just pretend it's still Friday. It's been a busy week. You have GemmaK to blame for this little gift. Maybe her cats will bring her a "gift" from the field. :) Here goes...

10 years ago .....
I'd been working at Mindscape for 5 years, and still thought I'd never have trouble finding a job. I was running a BBS (The Infoway), and had web sites on AOL, CompuServe and Linex. I'd never heard of blogs.

I had a blog, but it had only one posting in it. At home, our aquarium started a fire, but things weren't too bad otherwise. It was only June.

The company I worked for laid off the programming staff, and we went for a long stretch wondering when I'd find another place to work. I had more domain names than cats.

Alaska, Hawaii, New Orleans, Stinson Beach, the International Space Station

5 things I like doing...
reading, Writing, movies, exploring, hiking

5 things I would never wear...

Stephen Hawking, Aisha Tyler, Osama bin Laden, Bill Gates, Spider Robinson

I was doing exactly what I'm doing now.

Great list! (Are you sure you don't want a blog of your own?) :)

Well, since you ask, I do want my own blog. I'm working on a target date of September first. I think that I have enough material to last awhile. It's my lack of computer skills that terrify me.

Anyway, I'm going to give it a try. I'll let you know the exact date when it's ready. By the way, was it a hard decision to use your last name?

Woohoo! Congratulations!

The Internet wasn't as wild and woolly when I first started using it, and hardly anybody had even heard of it, so it didn't bother me much using my last name, and once I'd established who I was, it didn't make much sense to try going without. Lots of people publish blogs without using their last name (or even their first, in some cases).

If you want even more anonymity, you can get another email address (and I recommend this) to use just for your blog. You can get free ones from many sources, including hotmail.com and gmail.com (if you want a gmail address, let me know and I'll send you an invite).

Computer skills is not an issue. If you don't know something, there's plenty of people to ask, and a good place to ask is always Google. If I have a question about something, the odds are that someone else has had the same question and it's already been answered someplace Google can find.

You could also have Lisa and GemmaK give you one of their twenty-dollar makeover specials, and then you can have them set you up with a blogroll (where you list your favorite links to other places) and all the other common accoutrements.

If you're worried about messing up, my biggest recommendation is that you edit your posts with a text editor of some sort (even Notepad will do) and save them as files on your system before posting them. That way, if your blog goes bye-bye (which hasn't happened to me, but individual posts have gotten lost when my computer crashed before I could post them), you have a local backup.

I never have a lack of stuff I can blog about, I just don't always have the time or frame of mind. On any given day, you can write about something that happened at work, or something your dogs did, or something in the news, or something interesting you found on a blog or other web site.

If you want, I can set up a blog for you on blogspot.com in no time at all (takes less than an hour) and you could be blogging tonight! Then you can start redesigning and adding things whenever the fancy strikes you. As long as you stay with Blogger, you can redesign your blog all you want without losing the posts you've already done, and you can go back and re-edit posts at any time (unlike comments).

Can't wait to see your blog. Do we really have to wait 'til September? :)

Thanks for the advice and offer of help. My plan for this month, is to write 30 posts and pretend that I'm going to actually publish them. If I can do that, then next month I'll work on getting the blog set up. I wrote 5 posts yesterday at work. I didn't have time to write anything today, but I have several stories in my head. It looks like I can meet my quota.

I will hire Gemmak and Lisa to help me with the design. I welcome any other advice that you can offer me. But, what's with this "you could be blogging tonight" business? You're scaring me. I need to take it slow. (Now I sound like me on some of my bad dates.) I do appreciate your interest and enthusiasm, though. :)

One more piece of advice.

Don't worry about how often you blog, or how well you blog. For one thing, you've been blogging every day right here. :)

Like cooking or gardening, you do it because you enjoy it, or you enjoy the results, and you only need worry about pleasing yourself. Write for yourself, and you'll attract readers who like that type of writing. No matter what you write, there will be people who like it, and people who don't, and there's nothing wrong with that. Just write for yourself, and you'll be writing for the people who like your writing.

OH, HOORAY FOR MELISSA GETTING A BLOG OF HER OWN!

Had to put that in caps. :)

I also ditto everything Dave said about blog posting and not worrying about "having material" for your blog. Your comments are often blogposts in themselves, Melissa!

Pretty please let me know when you're up and running with your own little spot in the blogworld.

Loved both of your guys' meme answers, too.

(I cannot imagine the grief of losing a child, Melissa. That is my greatest fear. My heart goes out to you. ♥ )

Thank you, Mary. I do so appreciate your thoughts. Life goes on, whether you want it to or not. I'm much better now, although the pain still sits a little too close to the surface. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your caring words.
