Rocks in my Head

I've been looking forward to spring so I can start landscaping. One of the tools I like to use are rocks. They make great borders, and they make nice focal points. Central Oregon has a lot of rocks. You see them everywhere. Except on our property. We have no rocks larger than your fist, and hardly any that size. I've been pondering where I can go to steal some nice rocks for the yard. But I don't have to worry about that so much now.

When we bought the house, it was covered in snow, as were the grounds. As was the RV of the guy who sold us the house. He stayed in the RV while he was working on the house, and once he sold it, he discovered the snow kept him from towing it away. We've had it here since we bought the place.

He's been cruising the house once a week, waiting for the snow to melt so he can take back his RV. He stopped by yesterday and backed his truck up to it. But the RV is still here.

His truck almost got stuck in the mud. It was like quicksand. No way was he going to be able to tow a big RV out of here. He drove away, leaving a trail of mud down the road. (Not to worry, it's raining tonight, which should wash away the mud. Doesn't help the RV situation, though.)

He came back a short time later. His truck was full of rocks! He'd gone to a property he owns and filled his pickup with lava rocks the size of ski boots. I helped him unload, and we sank the rocks into the mud between the RV and the road. He's coming back in the next few days with more rocks. Once the sun comes back, the heat and the rocks should turn the mud into a more stable surface to haul the RV over.

And when he's done, I'll have a truckload of rocks for the garden. Woo hoo!

What would have happened if you didn't want the rocks? Would he have taken them back?

There are lots of places around here to uh...acquire rocks. The problem isn't in finding the rocks, it's lifting them into your vehicle. I've seen many weekend warriors grunting and straining to get some monstrous rock in their truck. It must be frustrating to see the perfect rock and not be able to budge it.

If I hadn't wanted the rocks he would have taken them back. He's glad I wanted them. ;)

I'd love to have some rocks too large for me to move. I'd really like to have a few boulders, but I haven't decided yet how to manage that. Once I had them, I'd probably need one of those rigs mechanics use to life auto engines to move the rocks around. Some day...

Aw, that's great! I wish someone would drop off some free rocks for us. :-) I'm sure we'll find plenty of rocks when we start to landscape our backyard since we live in a rocky soil area. But those aren't fun to dig out. I love seeing huge boulders as a focal point . . . I've just never thought about how they got there.
