Not Lovely and Not Thin

In her latest post, Melissa reveals, uh, how she stays Lovely and Thin. Now it's my turn. The truth is...

I'm neither lovely, nor thin. I'm a desk jockey. I sit at a computer all day, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. For most of the past year, though, I've been pretty active...

Because of our relocation, we've gone through several stages of activity. Throwing things out. Moving furniture. Buying, moving, assembling and locating new furniture. Fixing up the house so it can be sold. Packing much of our possessions into boxes and moving them into the garage, then after we'd bought the new house, moving the boxes from the garage to a van or truck, then from there to the new house. Unpacking. Relocating. Not to mention yardwork, digging a pond, moving lots of rocks around.

In an unusual turn of events for me, I developed more muscles and strength than I'm used to. It felt good. Maybe it's just a guy thing, but when we feel strong and fit, it does wonders for our frame of mind.

But that's pretty much all done now. No more moving furniture around, packing and unpacking, relocating rocks. I'm back to being mostly a desk jockey, and the muscles and the calorie burning are fading. We still like to eat out, though. I don't like the direction things are going. (Gravity sucks!)

So some of you are probably thinking, "What's the problem? Get some exercise, tubby!"

Therein lies the problem. Goodman don't play that. I've tried weightlifting, and situps and all your typical exercise stuff, and I hate it. Besides the fact that it bores me to tears, I also tend to get physical ailments from exercise. I'm no fan of soreness, either.

Connie and I walk a lot, and we go on hikes, but it doesn't seem to be enough. There is an exercise that I don't mind, however, and I've started doing that more often...

I've been riding my bike again. Even then, the timing has to be right. If it's too chilly, the cold air rushing past my temples gives me a screaming headache, and I tend to get more muscle aches. If it's too hot, I feel ill. See, I think we're not meant to exercise. When I do, my body likes to torture me back, as if to say, "Knock it off, moron! Don't you know you're a geek?"

Lately, the temperature has been dropping into the 40's at night. It's been getting up in the 90's by day. So for the past week, I wait until it gets up between 70 and 80, and that's when I ride my bike. It's not easy being me.

It's not just a guy thing, girls also feel good when strong and fit. I know what you mean, though, about getting easily injured from exercise. I have the same problem and have to be careful about how hard I push myself. Getting old is just so inconvenient.

You do realize that my post was tongue-in-cheek? The secret to my loveliness is being photogenic.

By the way, you said that you would post a picture of your muscles. We're waiting. :)

Join a cycling club. Then you'll have peer pressure to help you bike more, but you won't be working out, just hanging out with friends.

The muscles are gone! I wonder, though, if I look different than I do on camera. I sure look better in my mind's eye than I do on film. Maybe I'm un-photogenic. ;)

That's a good idea Dan, but probably more trouble than it's worth. The key for me is convenience, which means just tooling out of my garage every day and enjoying the scenery. To bike with others would mean putting the bike on a rack and driving someplace where other bikers were. The area I'm in has half-acre lots and we're surrounded by national forest, so the population density is very, very low.

When I was at Mindscape I started a weekly bike ride, which was pretty popular... but I dropped out... I was the slowest one in it. :)
