Taarka! Taarka! Taarka!
Last night Connie and I enjoyed a magical night. Great dinner, great bellydancing, great music. The music was courtesy of the band Taarka. You can sample Taarka's music on their MySpace pages at Taarka MySpace, Enion Pelta-Tiller and David Tiller.
The band last night consisted of David Tiller on guitar and mandolin, Enion Pelta-Tiller on violin, William Downes on bass, and percussionist-extraordinaire Dale Largent on djembe, doumbek, cymbals and you-name-it. They describe themselves as "Seismic gypsy hypno grazz", whatever that means. They reminded me of Jean-Luc Ponty, Barrage, Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks, Bela Fleck, and Willie and Lobo, all scrambled up in a barrel. Their sound is fast, fluid, bluesy, exotic and a little bit country. They're all I could ask for in a band, although a little harmonica, horns or sax wouldn't hurt.
If you get a chance to see them, don't pass it up.

I would have loved to have joined the two of you!

I just found this Taarka video on YouTube.
Awesome find! There were a half dozen videos there, I'm listening to them now as I work. Different players on drums and bass, but same guitar and violin. I love watching her play the violin, and the drummer on Fat Chance was fun to watch. I may try to play along with that video on my djembe.
