RocketDock

My favorite new freeware utility is RocketDock, an application launcher that docks to any edge of your desktop and lets you easily launch whatever applications you like. It has a great appearance, and can be set to auto-hide. Applications are added to it easily by dragging shortcuts to the dock, and you can rearrange them by dragging them where-ever you want.

The way I have it set up is centered along the top edge of my desktop, configured to auto-hide. I removed all the default icons it came with and dragged my most commonly used shortcuts to it. It had docklets (widgets) you can add to it. The battery meter docklet has a slick appearance.

Did I mention it was free?
