Your Fuel Door

I used to rent a lot of cars as part of my employment. I learned that before getting in the new car the first thing I should do is walk around it to make sure there were no dents or scratches not marked on the rental agreement (or flat tires; I once got a car that had a flat tire), and to note which side the fuel door is on.

When we were in Las Vegas recently I remembered the walk-around part, but forgot to check the fuel door. When I pulled up to the pump at the gas station, it turned out the gas cap was on the other side. oobz

But I learned something recently that would have helped me. (Why do we always learn things after we need them?) On most new cars, there's a little image of a gas pump next to the fuel gauge on your dashboard (as pictured above). Next to the pump is an arrow that points to the side of the car where the fuel door is. In this case, it's pointing to the left. Does your car have that? Ain't that cool? You'll thank me the next time you drive a strange car.

I never knew that. I used to have a car that had the fuel cap under the hood, I forget if it was the front or back. I wish I knew what it's gas pump drawing looked like.

My indigo blue Mazda 5 has this handy little feature. I am fortunate enough to NOT have to use it. Although really... it scares me.. because if you can't remember what side of the car your gas cap is on... what happens with the thoughts processes that really take some brain power? I can just see myself throwing my hands in the air... "no no no.. no more questions about whether I want to take a cut in my mortgage rate... I can't even figure out what side of the car my gas cap is on....

I usually do a quick visual, but that little arrow has come in handy a couple of times.

I guess I should have read the manual. But I didn't, because I don't have the right plumbing. :)
