David Bowers Colony Video

David Bowers has kindly allowed me to publish the tape of Saturday's performance of A Deep Snow. In the video, from left to right, are Julie Southwell-Bowers on violin (sorry you're so obscured, but the violin was awesome), Shireen Amini on congas (her CD comes out next month!), the wicked Jared "J-Rodd" Forqueran on drumset, David Bowers on acoustic guitar, fashionista Aaron Miller on excellent bass (in red wig and little black dress) and yours truly in the black fedora as a guest on slider didgeridoo.

David Bowers Colony - A Deep Snow

(Sorry about the video quality. It was a low light condition and we were using a camcorder we almost never use. Also, not shown is the dulcet-voiced Emily Lewis who sat out this piece, but she adjusted the mike stand for me.)

That was so great. I'm glad that you had a solo so I could figure out which sound was your instrument.

I thought it was funny that when you were done you naturally needed to wipe your mouth and then had to suddenly shake hands with the same wet hand.

How did it come about that you got to perform with them?

The poster for the performance included the terms "hypnotic" and "trance" and I thought a didge would sound good in trance music, so I asked if he needed a didge (we chat frequently). He had no idea if I was good or not, or what I sounded like, but he graciously said, "Bring on the didge!" and I did. There was no rehearsal, and I had no idea what the piece sounded like, but my job was just to drone and match the rhythm so I winged it. That's jazz. :)

I had a whole can of soda while waiting for my cue, so I was rather wired on caffeine when it was time, and I tend to zone out playing didge, and I couldn't see much on stage because of the hat and the angle of my head. Next time (if there is one) I'll take better advantage of a solo, but I was happy to stay in the groove and not mess up.

Leave it to a nurse to catch that handshake thing. :) I thought about it at the time, but I'm healthy and it was just to shake off the tingle from droning for ten minutes.

I love the "mix and match" philosophy of many central Oregon bands. Everyone in the David Bowers Colony plays or has played in other bands as guests or members. It brings a freshness and vitality with each new sound.

I used to get stage fright, but I think playing in a drum circle every week has cured me of that, as I discovered when unexpectedly asked to join in on one of Coyo's tunes recently when they were performing at McMenamin's. (I had no mike, and wanted something that wouldn't be lost in the flute, guitar or drums, so I played zills - finger cymbals.)

It's odd seeing myself in a video; I'm fairly adept at avoiding cameras. I prefer to be behind one. Next time I didge in public I need to move around more and not just stand there. Ya learns something every day. :)

Very cool, Dave. I enjoyed seeing and hearing you up there on stage. Didn't know you played the didge!

Me too, Lisa!

Thanks, LN. Do I know you? I don't recognize your initials.
