There is a lot of material to work with here, but I'm going to try to exercise some self-restraint and only expand upon one category. "Things That I Would Be Disappointed To Find In My Shoe", I am modifying slightly. Being a nurse, and a somewhat clumsy one, the following things I have actually dropped on my shoes. Hence, the new category of "Things That I Am Disappointed To Find In My Shoes."
1) vomit
2) bedpans full of urine
3) bedpans full of other stuff
4) drain blood
5) Red Cross blood
6) bloody diarrhea
7) pus soaked dressings
8) mysterious leaks from unknown bodily orifices.
I really hate it when I drop these things on my feet at the beginning of the shift. Then, I have to walk around the rest of the evening with my feet sloshing around in my shoes. But, I try to look at the bright side. Any spill that misses my face is a spill that I can live with (literally).

You know, I watch ER, and I think to myself, "I could never do that."

P.S. You couldn't, maybe, keep some spare kicks in your locker? ugh!
P.P.S. Do nurses ever go home, after a long day on their feet, tell hubby their feet are killin' them, and good hubby says, "Here, honey, let me rub your feet." Don't do it! You don't know where they've been!

I have a few nurses in my family and I've heard lots of similar things. What's extra fun is when the nurses get together at a family function and "talk shop" to compare their experiences while the rest of us are eating.
But seriously, I second Dave's "Bless you" for the work you do.
Keeping an extra pair of shoes in my locker would be a good idea if I had one. Unfortunately, there are more nurses than lockers.
Another challenge is deciding what to do with your shoes once you're home. Most nurses keep their work shoes in their garages. Unless something especially bad has happened, I wear my shoes into my house. If I kept my shoes in my garage, I would find some things in my shoes that I would really be disappointed to find, like rat droppings and black widow spiders.
Bodily fluids aren't all that bad once you get use to them and it does make for entertaining stories to tell. I do refrain from telling gross stories to family and friends while they are eating, although, I don't really understand why it affects their appetite. It doesn't affect mine.
