The Sounds of Spring
No matter what time I set my alarm for, I always seem to wake up before it goes off. Unless, of course, I forget to set the alarm, then I oversleep.
At any rate, I was lying in bed this morning, listening to the sun come up. I can hear it come up, because the birds start twittering in the backyard. I heard the loud call of the quail, ca-CAW-caw, ca-CAW-caw! I heard the laughing call of our Western bluejay, rahk-rahk-rahk-rahk-rahk. And I heard the song of a bird I've never seen, that we refer to as the sad-song bird, three long whistled falling notes in a minor key, deeeee, dooooo, doooo. Deeeee, doooo, doooo.
Once or twice a night, we hear a loud shriek from what we believe to be some kind of owl, schreeet!

This morning, I woke up to a dog kicking my back in his sleep. It was just starting to get light and having remembered your blog, I listened for the birds. I listened hard for at half an hour. No birds. I fell back asleep and later woke up again when the gardeners arrived. Still no birds. The next time that I woke up, a dog was dry heaving on the bed. No birds again. When I later woke up, a dog was kissing my face. (Yeah, it was the heaving dog.) No birds. Finally, I woke up naturally around ten. Birds were chirping everywhere. Perhaps, unlike my dogs, birds know not to bother me before ten.
I woke up again this morning at dawn by being kicked in the back by a dog. This time there was a singing bird right outside my window. I guess the bird didn't get the memo. Before, I would have fallen right back to sleep. Now that I have become sensitized to bird sounds, I lay there seething until the bird left. Thanks, Dave. :)
Yeah, well, if you sleep with dogs... ;)
I consider myself to be lucky. ;)
