Brrr!

We moved here about a month and a half ago. Since that time, it's dropped to about 20 degrees at night, sometimes as low as ten degrees, and then warmed (if you can call it that) to at least freezing (32 deg.) during the day, and often into the 40's or 50's.

This morning I looked at the thermometer I stuck to the sliding door to the backyard, and it was about 5 deg. BELOW ZERO.

Brrr!

I just woke up and the house is 56 degrees. It's a couple of degrees cooler outside. I'm miserable. I don't want to know what 5 below feels like. Have you gotten your first heating bill yet?

Where did you get the (cool see-through) thermometer?

Hey, that's less than mine and I rarely use the heater. Something is terribly wrong. Do you suppose that the dogs are secretly turning the heater on when I leave for work and turning it off before I get home? Goldens are pretty smart.

Electricity is a lot cheaper in Oregon. I think it's hydroelectric power we get from a dam.

I don't recall where we got the thermometer, but I've seen them in hardware stores, drug stores, etc. If you Google for "electrostatic cling thermometer" you'll turn it up. Here's one seller: Stacks and Stacks. Our sliding door is double-paned glass, which helps isolate the thermometer from the house's internal temperature, but I'm sure there's still some contamination of the reading. When I get some time I'll be hooking up the outside sensor for my digital weather station again.

What temperature do you keep the thermostat set to inside the house?

We keep it at 60 deg. at night. I'd keep it cooler, but if you make it too low the pipes could freeze. During the day it's set to 64 deg. It's a programmable thermostat, so I don't need to fuss with it unless I want to tweak it to accommodate my current activity level.
