I'm Alive

While philosophers still debate the meaning of life, I can say that, with regards to the commonly accepted use of the term, I'm alive. Exhausted, but alive.

I took off Friday and Monday so I could do a double run to Marin County to pack and move the last of our stuff. The plan was also to pick up Debbie on the first run and bring her back on the second, so she could see where we now live and we could have a little family time.

The first run went fine. I rented a cargo van, drove to Marin, did some packing and loaded up the cargo van, and took Deb with me back to Oregon. Then we woke up Sunday morning, and it was snowing heavily with storm warnings out. On top of which, the cargo van was stuck in our driveway and didn't want to move.

So Sunday we just hung out at the house. Monday morning we woke up and it was raining out, a lot of snow had melted, all the icicles were gone and I was able to move the van. Debbie and I headed out and she helped me pack up that night in Marin. Tuesday I did more packing and loading and headed north again. Despite dicey road conditions and stormy weather, I made it home alive. At two in the morning. Then today I resumed work.

In the meantime, my biceps are getting disturbingly large for a geek. All these weeks of moving boxes around have transformed them from their typical stealth condition into something normally seen on guys who work out. I don't work out.

Despite all this effort, I'm still not done moving. I was able to get everything out of the house, and I even vacuumed, but there's still a bunch of junk in the garage. So this weekend I'll be doing another run to Marin, and it will be the last to the old house.

While I was in Marin this last trip, the mail lady stopped by to give us our mail and asked how the move was going. She wanted to know if we were using the move to "feng shui" our collection of possessions. In other words, to downsize. I'd never heard that used as a verb before. We've been trying to do just that. The problem is, I'm a packrat. There's a little demon in me that hates to throw anything away that I could conceivably use in the near future. Or even the far future. Each item I've been "garbaging" has been accompanied by a wail in my head from the packrat demon.

"Nooooooo!" he wails. "Don't throw that away. You might need it some time! You're wasting money. You'll never find it again. Keep that!"

Moving is really hard. If you heed my advice, you'll never move. Just stay where you are. It's easier that way.

I can't believe you did it all yourselves. I just can't imagine moving and packing everything to another State, all on my own. When i move i'm going to call the moving company and they can do everything!!

Actually, using movers might work for other people, but didn't seem practical in our situation.

We used movers when we moved from Los Angeles to Marin County, and what I learned was: they drop boxes, they stack boxes really high, they bash furniture into walls, doorframes and other furniture, they charge a lot of money.

Because I knew I'd be more careful moving boxes, we didn't have to pack each item so carefully, which would have taken much longer. We packed a lot of stuff before we put the house up for sale, in order to de-clutter, and we were in a rush to sell before the market fell. So we saved time packing by not packing for gorillas.

If we used movers, all of our stuff would have arrived at once. It would have been mayhem. There would be boxes filling the garage and the house, and no room to move around. This way, after I moved a truckload of stuff, there was time to unload, unpack and organize before I moved another truckload. There were three truckloads in a 15-foot truck and several truckloads in cargo vans.

We live on a short cul-de-sac, on a narrow street. I don't think they could have gotten a truck bigger than 15 feet into our driveway.

We moved over 400 miles, in bad weather, to a house in the snow. They would have charged a fortune.

But I can't believe we did it all ourselves either. :)

Good luck, and drive safe. I moved from a much bigger house last year and it's hard to estimate what will comfortably fit. I also packed and moved myself. I had a lot of help from friends, and I paid a couple of big guys to move the heavy stuff but they were careful (because they knew I would kill them if they broke anything:) I actually like moving, no I like buying houses and fixing them up, but it gets harder to move every time!
btw: photo of said bicep should be included in post.

I'm relieved to hear that all is well. You know how I worry.

When my father was still in the service, we had to move every few years. The military was generous with how many tons we could move, but there were limits. There is nothing like moving frequently to keep pack-rat tendencies under control. Are you having trouble finding places to put things?

Does Debbie like her new family home? After college, do you think that she will follow you there?

Please include a picture of your biceps. It's not fair that only Connie gets to see them. :)

We also just moved by doing it all ourselves . . . it was exhausting. We had probably the same amount of stuff as you, and we packed it all and moved it about an hour away. It took a lot more time and effort than we thought it would, but I'm still glad we saved the money by doing it ourselves. It's good to hear that you're almost settled in . . . I love seeing pictures of your beautiful area! :-)
