Light and Snow

Today our insurance agent drove out from Bend to take photos of the house. It's been clear and sunny the past few days, but we still have snow. The insurance guy couldn't believe it. All the snow had melted away in Bend already, and he was going to go golfing. But then he gets here and we still have snow. Lots of snow. I've been shoveling snow from the front yard, trying to clear the path from the front door to the driveway.

The guy had his dog in his pickup truck. You know you're living in Central Oregon when your insurance agent drives a pickup and shows up with a dog. Poor guy almost got stuck in the driveway when he went to leave. I'm telling you, we've got a lot of snow.

Normally I'm a night owl. I do most of my blogging at night, after the news, before I go to sleep. Since moving here, though, I find myself falling right to sleep. I couldn't figure it out. I've been pondering the problem, because I don't like feeling tired every day and not being able to stay up.

This morning I think I figured it out. Do you remember the pictures I posted of the house, before we moved in? The ones with no furniture or window treatments? Well, we have furniture now. But still no window treatments. The sun's been waking me up about six o'clock every morning, only I didn't realize it was the light waking me up. That's what sleep deprivation does to you.

So today I hung a blanket in the bedroom window to block the light, and hopefully I'll be able to sleep in tomorrow morning.

What a nice man that he takes his dog to work with him. I hope that the dog got to ride in the front with him and not in the back like some kind of animal.

I wish that I could share my sleeping abilities with you. I don't have curtains or shades in my bedroom and I can sleep with the sun shining on my face. If the moon is shining in my eyes, though, I get upset and have to do something about it. Sun good, moon bad.

Lot of my friends who are contractors take their dogs to work with them. Of course they must ride in the front, in the shade, at least to my house!
I'm sure you will enjoy getting some kind of window treatments up, your utility bills will probably go down some too!

Repeat after me, Dave. "Circadian rhythm."

My doctor would LOVE it if I had the particular sleep/wake problem that you're trying to resolve!

Fooey. So much for that idea. Even with a nice dark room, I still woke up about six. It may be time to resort to Benadryl. Better living through chemistry.

I kind of thought that sunlight might not be the problem, since I sometimes sleep even better with light on my face.

Yes, S & M, the dog got to ride in front. :)

We plan to put up window treatments, we just haven't gotten around to it yet. We're still working on unpacking the boxes in the garage and organizing things. All the windows are double-paned, so we don't lose too much heat through them, and we gain heat from the sunlight.

Moving to Bend this summer. Have been on East Coast for almost 40 years. Husband has some Oregon relatives including his sister. We will be 62 and 63. The thought of moving terrifies me....all that stuff. Any help. We have a house we are renting in North East section of Bend. Encourage me....

Great photo. It's about 80 here, the hillsides are green and wildflowers are starting to bloom and I can see that you've been busy shoveling snow. I hope that you are at least sledding or finding some way to have fun in the snow.

What you can expect, anonymous, is to find yourself in a city that's friendly and affordable.

What is it that scares you? Is it the move itself? Being out of your comfort zone? Being someplace strange?

Moving is tough. That is true. But it's an opportunity to streamline your life and possessions, to start anew. It's okay to be scared, but the thing to do is accept it and make the best of it, look for the positive aspects of it and enjoy it. It's an adventure.

Moving was hard for us, but we got through it, and now that we're here we're having a blast. We've already met people, made friends, and found great places to eat and shop and explore. Keep in touch. :)
