Sturm und Drang

We just had a nice lightning storm. Whenever I see a lightning flash, I like to start counting. Depending on air temperature, speed travels about a mile in 5 seconds. When I'm counting, I like to say "and" before the single digits. So a bolt of lightning about a mile away goes like this:   Flash!   "... and 1... and 2... and 3... and 4... and 5..."   Boom.   A bolt two miles away would thunder about 10 seconds after the flash.

I was doing this today. Most of the bolts were off in the distance. Then, one of them goes, Flash!   "..."   BOOM!!!

Then it started raining.

I LOVE thunderstorms. The one thing I don't like about S. California. And, I swear if I ever move - which I hope someday to do - I will move where they have rain and thunderstorms. My husband is begging me to go to Oregon but now that I'm raising my sister's two kids (ages 9 and 11) it's going to be tough to leave anytime soon. Still I dream of thunder and lightening and rain....

I love thunderstorms, but my dogs are afraid of them. The last time we had a thunderstorm, Murph wet the bed. How does Ringo feel about them?

Terri, I learned to love thunderstorms at camp in Big Bear. I've never seen lightning so frequent, nor as varied. We got sheet lightning, heat lightning, even ball lightning. It was kewl. :)

Ringo doesn't mind thunder too much. He looks a little startled (what else is new?) but it's not so much fear as it is, "huh. What was that?"

If you ever come visit, Michelle, we can put a plastic liner on the guest bed. ;)

I love thunderstorms as well. We've had couple overhead storms where the flash and boom are almost simulateous. We were on Maui when hurricane Estelle passed by to the south. It was 30 seconds between flash and boom. Even at that distance, the building shook like you wouldn't believe. Much more intense that any of the overhead storms here at home.

Roll them thar bowling balls! Bring 'em on!

Chicago does GREAT thunderstorms. KABOOM! KABANG! I miss those storms.

Once, when Rusty and I were in the High Sierras on a backpack, we got caught in a very sudden thunderstorm.

While attempting to find a place to put up a temporary rain shelter, a bolt came down on the rock right behind us. FUdgesicles!

That's the first time that a thunderstorm caused my pulse to race to light speed (so to speak).

Recently, while in Henderson, Nevada, my Mom and I were treated to a light show over the distant mountains. We could see some of the bolts in the distance acting like giant bug zappers. One of them must have killed a HUGE lightning bug. Ha!

Southern California can get its share of thunderstorms. This past winter, Rusty and I got to "and 3..." on one of the bolts.

Thankfully, the thunderstorms don't phase Tess in the least. And, as for the rain, the wetter, the better.
