Sunriver Oktober Cache

Speaking of Sunriver, in October they're having a geocaching event (pdf). And a BBQ. And an Oktoberfest. All the same day.

If you know anything about me, you know I enjoy hiking, and I enjoy puzzles and games, and I especially enjoy gadgets. Gadgets, games and going places. So you'd think I'd be all over geocaching, right? Using a GPS to find buried treasure sounds right up my alley. But it's not.

When you get to really know me, you learn that I'm somewhat rebellious. I like to do things my own way. When I'm working, I'm constrained by schedules, and deadlines, and checklists, and following protocols. Which is fine. That's what I do to get the job done, because at work I'm goal oriented. I want to make a great game and ship it on time. But off work, I'm not so goal oriented. I'm often more about the journey than the destination.

Geocaching is about following someone else's clues and following their trail to the destination they prescribe. Somehow, that's just not me. Close, but not quite. But, then again, it is about games, gadgets and going somewhere, so it has a certain appeal.

On the other hand, a friend of mine is one of the top geocachers in the world. That's a little intimidating, isn't it?

Ah, what the heck. It's an opportunity to meet people, take pictures, go hiking and have some fun. We'll probably do it. Besides... there's BBQ!

I would ignore the geocaching and head straight for the Octoberfest. How can you not enjoy chugging beer while watching men dance in lederhosen?

Somehow, that doesn't appeal. ;)
