A Point of Law

I am not a lawyer. The law confuses me. For instance, copyright law...

Supposedly, you can't perform a song in public without paying royalties. What if I'm giving a speech, and in the speech I sing one line from a song? Do I have to pay royalties? What if, instead of singing it, I merely recited it? They don't teach you this stuff in school.

What if I'm giving a speech, and I get the audience to sing a song? Who gets sued? Me? The audience? I've seen a lot of concerts where the singer holds the mike out and lets the audience sing the chorus. Did they just violate copyright law? Can the record companies then sue every member of the audience?

With such inconsequential pondering consuming my thoughts, can I sue the record companies for interfering with my rights to peace and tranquility?

Enquiring minds want to know!

There's a fine line between inanity and insanity. Is there a difference? You bet your S! ;)
