Who's the Alpha Male?

Don't we all just want a little respect?

Our cat, Ringo, has a peculiar behavior. When Connie is in a vulnerable situation, like when she showers or uses the bathroom, he guards her. Actually, he's not so much a bodyguard as he is a sentry. If there was an actual threat, Ringo would go running. There'd be an orange blur, and an instant later Ringo would be cowering in another part of the house. But, in the meantime, you'd know there was a threat. Despite all that, we still call him our "potty guard".

Do you see anything wrong with this equation?

I suppose Ringo considers himself to be the alpha male. Ringo has always liked Debbie and Connie better than he likes me. That's all right. I can live with that. I don't need the approval of a cat. But it's more than that. It's a matter of respect.

It doesn't matter if I'm right outside the door, or even in the room with Connie. If he hears her use the toilet, he'll come from across the house to guard her. Even with me right there. See how little he thinks of me? Like I can't guard my own wife? What am I, chopped liver?

My dogs do that too, but I don't see it as guarding. They're terrified that I'm going to escape out the bathroom window. I can't go to the bathroom without a dog or three watching me. If I close the door, they will cry and scratch on the door.

If I'm sitting down in the bathroom (my apologies for the visual), our cats will come in, walk to the back of the toilet, rise up with their front feet on the rim, and put their noses in the back of the bowl to enjoy the bouquet. Doofus cats!

Have you escaped out bathroom windows before, Melissa? :)

Maybe you should cut back on the tuna, Alan. ;)

One of these days I'll tell the story of Connie's friend who escaped out a bathroom window. (Bad date!)

By the way, here's something else unusual about our cat: in the top picture of him above, if you turn your head to the left, you'll notice that the orange splotch on his side is the outline of a cat with its back arched. :)

Ringo would probably like it if you were chopped liver. :)
