Whole World Equals Half World?

I heard a phrase that got me to thinking. Suppose that someone is half a world away. (Hi, Michelle!) They're on the other side of the world. Now, that being the case, isn't the entire planet between you and them? So they're not really a half a world away, they're the whole world away. Right?

I would think they could only be half a world away if you go around the circumerance. If you go straight thru the earth, then I suppose it would be a whole world away, unless Michelle is standing in the earth's core. My God. How will she breathe??

Lisa says Michelle would only be half a world away if you go around the circumference. So where would you be if you went a whole world away?
