We've Got Moss!

Woo hoo! We have moss!

We were at a local garage sale several months ago, and "Phil" had some volcanic rock for sale. I purchased a few pieces and put them in the garden, and with the rain we've had the past few days, I noticed that the moss is green and growing!

You may be wondering why that's so exciting. So am I.

When I bought the rocks, Phil was pleased to point out that the rocks had some dormant moss on them, and that when exposed to rain it would green up. He made it sound like a great selling point. I bought the rocks anyway.

A few weeks later, we were talking to Tim, one of our neighbors, and we got to talking about the wall of volcanic rock he has in front of his house. He took me to the wall and pointed at the moss growing there. He was very pleased.

A guy I used to work with used to say, "If ten people tell you you're drunk, you should probably lie down." So if Phil and Tim tell me moss is cool, who am I to argue?

We've got moss! (And that's good why?)

Is that moss or lichens? Whichever, I think it's cool. That would never grow here.

It's moss. Moss is thick and furry. Lichen is usually lighter colored, and it's flat and flaky, like thin bark or a potato skin. Lichen is a cool organism; it's a symbiosis of algae and fungus. The algae provides the fungus with food from sunlight, and the fungus provides the algae with water and minerals.

We had moss in Marin, but never in Southern California.

(I know all this about lichen because I was an alchemist once in an online game, with skills in woodlore and sagecraft so I could forage for my own ingredients. Aren't you glad you didn't ask? :) )

Your growing moss on purpose???

We can't get rid of the stuff. Half the lawn is now moss. I tried moss killers and special fertilizers but just ended up with ugly brown patches. I finally decided that as long as it's green I'll let it be. I also grows on rocks, trees, fences and even cars.

I fought the moss and the moss won.
