Never Tell Me the Odds!

The National Safety Council produced this wonderful graph of your odds of dying. Check it out. I plan to live forever or die trying.

From the chart:

Odds of dying from any cause: 1 in 1 (100%)

Heart disease: 1 in 5
Cancer: 1 in 7
Stroke: 1 in 24
Motor Vehicle Accident: 1 in 84
Suicide: 1 in 119
Falling: 1 in 218
Firearm assault: 1 in 314
...
Fireworks discharge: 1 in 340,733

Cheery, isn't it?

LOL, Claude. Please don't. :)

Are you calling me a nerd, Jen? Well, it's true, I am a nerd. Sadly, there's a stop-ship bug in the game I'm working on and I was in crunch mode all weekend trying to kill the bug.

Last week on Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip they mentioned the address of Skywalker Ranch in Marin County and I almost fell over. I've been to the ranch on a few occasions, and at one time its location was closely guarded. No longer, I guess. The internet has made it available to anyone who googles.

My favorite part was the odds of dying from any cause is one hundred percent.

How did you happen to go to the ranch and what did you think of it?

Hey i wanna know if the stats are for the USA alone OR if its standardised across the world? Obviously the 1 in 1 is world wide.

I was amused by the odds of dying from any cause as well. I keep thinking, 100% so far! What about those who believe in reincarnation? For them the odds are more like 1000% that they'll die! :)

I would bet those stats are U.S. numbers. Suicide rates alone vary drastically from country to country. For some reason, I derive some satisfaction from looking at certain odds and thinking, "Well I'm certainly never going to die from that!"

I don't want to die in bed. I'd rather end my time doing something cool, like saving someone from a burning building, defending my family or getting abducted by aliens. But that's just me. ;)
