Nesting Time

The tree swallows have been checking out our nesting boxes for a few weeks now. They hang in the doorway and pop their head in repeatedly. Today they finally decided on one. The same one they used last year. Go figure. They've been bringing dead grass into the box today to build their nest. We're going to be god-parents again!

Yes, it's definitely nesting time.

Earlier this month, the sparrows and finches were warring over Tess's fine dog hairs, which would float across the lawn after each grooming session.

The crows eagerly gathered the twigs from JJ and Rusty's tree trimming sessions. Once in awhile, the crows would fly by with various weeds or unidentifiable man-made material in their beaks.

A few weeks ago, Rusty and I observed a sparrow inspecting our next door neighbor's dryer vent, which attaches to the outside of her house at the second story level.

At first, we thought that the smart, little devil was gathering lint from inside the vent. Now, we know differently. Apparently, the nest construction site is inside the dryer vent.

This might give a whole new meaning to having a little one in the oven.
