Happy Happy Joy Joy

Connie's been craving some dim sum. A bit of Googling and I found a local purveyor. Well, somewhat local. Ain't no dim sum out here in the boonies.

The research revealed that on Sundays you can get dim sum at Double Happiness, which got good reviews from BORis and The Bulletin. The last time we had Chinese food was at the place by Radio Shack in La Pine (it was really good). Anyway, Double Happiness moved from downtown Bend to the east side, next to the Quizno's near Costco. So, Sunday we journeyed into Bend in search of dim sum for lunch.

Sadly, they'd had some kind of problem in the kitchen and weren't offering dim sum last Sunday. I guess we'll try again another Sunday. In the meantime, we still wanted Chinese food, so we settled down at a lovely table. We've never been to Double Happiness before, so I can't vouch for the old location, but their new store is clean and attractive. The dishware was porcelain white with a lovely blue design around the edge. All the dishware matched, the plates, cups, saucers and sauce dishes.

Our waitress, cute and giggly, quickly brought us our soup. Connie had the egg flower soup, and was pleased with the chicken in it. I wondered which they put in first, the chicken or the egg.

I had hot and sour soup. It had to be one of the best servings of hot and sour soup I've ever had. It had a lot of rich flavor, and a nice bite to it. Maybe it's Double Happiness because they put in double flavor. (For hot and sour at home, we love the Kikkoman Hot & Sour Egg Flower Soup mix. It's easy to make, and tastes really good. It's my fave when I don't feel well.)

My main course was sweet and sour chicken with pork fried rice. For only $6.25 for the lunch, you get a lot of food. Soup, main course with rice, and a fortune cookie. The food was arranged nicely, and didn't skimp on the chicken. Half the plate was chicken, with lots of sauce, and half was fried rice and an egg roll. The chicken had a light, crisp batter and tasted very fresh. It wasn't soggy like you sometimes get at other places. The rice was good, but I'd have liked more egg and carrots in it.

Connie had the shrimp and chicken lunch in black bean sauce, and was quite tasty. She chose crab puffs instead of egg roll, which satisfied a bit of her dim sum craving. They were crab and cream cheese, very tasty and crispy.

This is the best Chinese food we've had in Bend.

There is this place in Ptown in Chinatown that has the best dim sum. If I could only remember the name! Maybe it's Fong's?

Connie was quite tasty?

Perhaps this explains the name Double Happiness.

Hi David,

I thought since you are still into good food, that you may be the same David Goodman who worked in Food for Thought in DC in 1981. If so, lets say hi after all these years!

Sorry, Mary, never been to DC. Intriguing name, though. Is Food for Thought an eatery or a library? :)
