John Butler Trio

We caught the John Butler Trio at the Domino Room in Bend last night (John Butler Trio on MySpace). I didn't know when I purchased the tickets that there was no theater seating at the Domino Room. We're supposed to stand there for three hours? We're not twenty years old any more!

We were leaning against the curtain on one wall when we noticed that people near us had pulled up the curtain to expose a shelf that they could sit on. I gave Connie a boost and after pulling myself up, we both had seating. Things were looking up...

The concert was outstanding! These guys are incredible musicians. John Butler gets sound out of guitars like he owned their souls. He does percussion on the soundboard, he plays slide guitar, he does guitar-picking at warp speed with both hands.

Shannon Birchall played bass and double bass. During his solo his playing was so thunderous I felt it in my nether regions. If I'd been a woman he'd have set me free.

Michael Barker did a drum solo like a man possessed, playing at lightning speed that had the audience cheering and dancing. He kept up such a fast, strong rhythm for so long I thought that I was going to have a stroke!

Our favorite tunes by JBT are Zebra and Treat Yo Mama, which we've enjoyed for a few years now, and we were thrilled that they performed both of them. Any time I listen to Zebra the next several hours are spent hearing "nah, nah, NAH-nah-nah, nuh NAH-nah-nah" coursing through my brain.

If you get a chance to see this group, don't pass it up. (You should bring earplugs if you're sensitive to loud music.) If you don't get the chance, get the CD's.

By the way, I just love my Panasonic Lumix camera. I took the handheld closeup photos at 10x optical zoom in low light, plus I shot video with it. Best pocket camera I've ever had.

Here's another review of last night's performance: New West Bend.

No seating for a three hour concert? Are most of their fans in their teens?

Hey hey hey Dave! Glad you enjoyed them. I last saw them at the ARIA (Australian Record Industry Awards) about 3 weeks prior to them heading your way. They spoke about touring the smaller clubs in the States and how they were looking forward to it, rather thean playing big venues.
"Zebra" is my all time fav too :)
Also....Oregon was on Aussie telly the other night...bad snow storms...thought of you guys immediately......everything ok there?
