Staccato

A few nights ago I took Connie to Staccato for her birthday. We'd never been there before. In fact, while we've known about it the past two years, it's on a corner we rarely travel and so it wasn't until recently that I realized where it was. The atmosphere is wonderful. I could live in a house decorated like Staccato, and the service was great. Even the silverware was attractive.

I had the New York Steak, pictured above on the left, with french fries. It was the best NY Steak I've had in a long time. Very tender, juicy and nicely seasoned. I was planning to take half of it home... but I finished it. The fries came with a typical ketchup, plus a chipotle ketchup that was surprisingly good.

Connie's dish, above right, was mahi-mahi on a a bed of whipped purple potatoes and a beurre blanc sauce. She loved it.

Also on the menu was "Mock Beef Tender Sous Vide" which I assumed was tofu or some other beef substitute. The waitress, though, explained that it was a beef shoulder that was cooked to be like tenderloin. That being the case, I think it should be called "mock mock beef" since it's not really a mock beef.

For dessert we split a tiramisu, served with shaved chocolate and biscotti. I've never seen tiramisu served in a mug before; usually it's served like a piece of cake. The tiramisu was tasty, but was a lot heavier than I'm used to. I prefer the mascarpone cheese to be very light. Especially after I've pigged out on steak.

All in all, a nice way to spend a birthday. (Did you notice the birthday greeting at the top of the blog? If you'll email your birthday to me, I'll add it to the blog.)

Did Connie get enough to eat? Her portion is only a small fraction of what you got. What was the red stuff on your steak?

The tough meat cut cooked until it's tender sounds like pot roast to me, not tenderloin.

Connie also had a Caesar salad and some artisan bread, some of my fries, and of course some tiramisu. We were both stuffed afterwards.

The steak was topped with a sauce made of something like stewed tomatos and cilantro or parsley and other seasonings. It was like a chunky marinara, and tasted great.
