Pink Underwear

Three of my all-time favorite sitcoms are Dharma & Greg, Two and a Half Men, and The Big Bang Theory, all by Chuck Lorre. In tonight's episode of Big Bang Theory, Sheldon got laid off and went home with all his office possessions in a cardboard box.

Over the years, I've been laid off many times, and I've had to take my stuff home in a box (or boxes). After that happened the first few times I learned not to keep so many books and gadgets at work. Now I travel light.

For the past two years, though, I've been working from home. One of the many advantages of working from home is that if you get laid off, you don't have to take anything home in a box. Like today, when I got laid off. No trip to HR, just a phone call. No packing stuff in a box. No awkward moments as the survivors avoid eye contact with the unlucky.

Merry Christmas.

Oh, no! Well I hope this is an "opportunity" for you... let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Thanks, Jen! I think that's exactly what this is: an opportunity to finish my book, to learn Ruby on Rails, to work on artificial intelligence, and to practice omphaloskepsis.

I'm getting three weeks' pay for untaken vacation time, plus severance pay, and we have some savings to fall back on.

I'm gonna take it easy for the holidays, and then next year I'll start thinking about another job. Of course, if you hear of anything in the meantime, give me a ring. :)

Yikes! I'd be flipping out. My husband had a fun 9 months of playing around when he got laid off. Now he's back working and I miss him at home.

Argh. No fun! Why can't they wait until AFTER the holdiays? Scrooges. I'm sure this will bring other wonderful things your way.

I'm sorry to hear such news, and what cowards to do it right before X-mas to save on bonuses. With your skills and good karma better things will come to you and likewise, your previous employer should reap the rewards of their karma soon.
Take the holidays off and enjoy the time with your family.

I'm sorry about the job, but that just means there's a better one out there, right?

Goodness gracious. You'll be fine, though.

I agree.. there's a better job out there somewhere... it's a new door to open.. all of that. Stay on the positive side. :)

Dave and Connie, I'm so sorry. It is so wrong for this to happen to you, especially like this.

Maybe one or both of you would like to become a nurse. There are no lay offs when it comes to the growing field of sick people.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Thanks, everyone. I think I was ready for a change, anyway. I am looking at this as an opportunity. Now I just have to wait for another door to open, but not a hospital door! :)

Or, as Joseph Campbell says, "We must be willing to get rid of the life we've planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us."
